Round two of the Speedway season will take the green flag at 4pm on Saturday, May 26 and all of the racing action will be presented by Mitchell’s Speedway Press of Oswego.

A rain date of Sunday, May 27 has been posted.

The Mitchell’s Speedway Press May 26 race schedule at Oswego Speedway will be highlighted with a trio of headlining acts.

The Novelis Supermodifieds will hit the Speedway in honor of Jim Shampine with a 75-lap feature go, while the ground pounding Race of Champions Modifieds will also take to the fast 5/8 for 75 circuits in honor of Richie Evans. The Pathfinder Bank SBS Series will bring their fast paced, two wide racing ways, to the Speedway as well with a 35-lap main event in memory of Tony White.

Grandstand gates will open for the evening at 1pm, with the first green flag waving at 4pm.

General admission grandstand tickets are set at $25 with padded reserved seats also available for $30.

Kids 16 & under are admitted free, with paid adult. Active Military with ID will also be admitted free for the night’s festivities.

Saturday’s program will also mark the first of three ‘Novelis Fan Can Chase’ nights at the Speedway. From 11:30am-2:30pm fans are encouraged to bring their aluminum recyclable cans to the ‘Novelis Fan Can Chase’ station on Albany St. directly in front of the Speedway.

Weekly and overall statistics will be kept and the households that bring in the most cans will be eligible for prizes including Budweiser International Classic Weekend tickets, season passes, and rides in the 2-Seat Supermodified.

Visit www.oswegospeedway.com for more information on the 2012 ‘Novelis Fan Can Chase’ nights at the Speedway.

After one weekend of action at Oswego Speedway, Canajoharie native Otto Sitterly sits on top of the heap in the Novelis Supermodified division. Sitterly, a 4-time Novelis Supermodified track champion and 2-time Memorial Day Weekend winner at Oswego Speedway bested an overall field of 31 Supermodifieds on Saturday, May 5 by making an inside pass on Dave Gruel in turn three on the race’s 46th circuit to then drive into Chris Nelson Insurance Victory Lane.

With the win Sitterly holds a 4-point advantage over his Nicotra Racing teammate Davey Hamilton, who will not be in action this Saturday night as he prepares his Indy Car team to compete at the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 27.

Gruel, who led 45-laps of the Speedway opener before giving way to Sitterly with a flat left front tire, sits third in the overall Speedway standings ahead of Brian Sobus and Jeff Abold.

Shaun Gosselin sits just outside of the Top 5 in the standings ahead of defending Memorial Day Weekend winner Randy Ritskes. Pat Lavery, Ray Graham, and Tim Snyder complete the Top 10 in the Novelis Supermodified championship after May 5.

Defending Speedway champion Joe Gosek is currently mired back in the 15th position overall, after steering issues relegated Gosek to a 23rd place finish on opening night.

In the Pathfinder Bank SBS Series, JJ Andrews leads the way in the Team Tapout No. 93. Opening night marked Andrews’ second career win at Oswego Speedway, his first since June 30, 2001.

Andrews started the May 5 opener from the 3rd position and made quick work of the front row, taking the top spot from Nate Sitterly on the 2nd lap. From there Andrews would hold off the charges of both Jack Patrick and Mark Castiglia to storm the Cam’s NY Pizzeria starters stand yet again.

Patrick trails Andrews by just 6-points in the overall series standings, with Castiglia 10 markers back in 3rd. Defending Bud Light SBS Classic champion Andrew Schartner and 2011 Race of Champions victor Kreig Heroth complete the Top 5 in series points after week one.

Positions six through ten in the Pathfinder Bank championship show the FFB racing machines of Rob Pullen, Tim Barbeau, Mike Bruce, AJ Bernys, and John Ketcham.

Like Gosek, defending SBS champion Mike Bond ran into issues on opening night. After losing multiple laps in the pit area with rear end issues, Bond got back on track for an 18th place finish, which puts him 16th in the standings.

The Race of Champions Modifieds will make their first visit of the season on Saturday night, and the tour has certainly seen quite a few changes as they prepare for the ‘Steel Palace.’

New for 2012, the series has switched to the American Racer Tire, which will have teams searching for the right combination as the season progresses.

Other changes include the integration of the 2 barrel Modified teams in to the RoC Asphalt Modified Tour program. The top finishing 2 barrel Modified team will receive a $500 bonus at each event this season and will be competing for a separate $3,000 point fund of their own.

Chuck Hossfeld is the defending RoC Modified Richie Evans Memorial 75 winner at Oswego Speedway.

For more information on the Race of Champions Modifieds be sure to visit www.raceofchampions.net.

Paller; DeCaire Win Winchester Must See Events

News from the Ohio River Valley and the Great Lakes

Winchester, IN – May 20, 2012 – The inagural ‘ Xtreme Speed Challenge ‘ was a heated affair both on and off the track. With temperatures in the high 80′s, a good crowd was on hand to witness the TRUFUEL Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series and BIOBASED.US Must See Racing Super Modified Series.

Jim Paller picked up his first ever supermodified feature at Winchester Speedway on 5.20.12. Photo by RG Design

The Supermodifieds were making their first appearance at Winchester in nearly twenty-two years. Mexico, New York driver, Michael Barnes lead the way in MSRSMS time trials with a lp of 14.027 seconds to capture the $1000 bonus courtesy of BIOBASED.US.

Kyle Edwards used a front row starting spot to grab the lead and led the majority of the 30-lap event. Quick qualifier Michael Barnes, who had been on top of the speed charts all weekened, saw his race come to and end when his race came to an end when he made contact with Larry Lehnert on the backstretch early in the race. Paller began his charge to the front and was all over race leader Edwards. Paller made the pass on Edwads just as Edwards slowed due to mechanical issues. Pau White and Paller then put on a thrilling battle for several laps until White was also sent to the pits with mechanical issues. The win was anything but easy for Paller and was worth $6000 for the Berlin Heights, Ohio driver. ” When we first started out the car was loose ” explained Paller. ” The car started getting better and better. I saw Kyle was fading. I drove under Kyle in three and four.on the outside and that was it. We got lucky. This is awesome. This is the first Supermodified win I’ve had. To have the win here with Must See Racing is just awesome ” concluded Paller.

The Must See See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series feature event was equally as entertaining. California driver, Jo Jo Helberg, set a new World’s Record for a 1/2 mile speedway when he turned a scortching lap of 12.669 seconds. 6 drivers in all were under the old Winchester Speedway track record. A hard charging Troy DeCaire battled his way into the lead before lap 5 and began to set sail. Helberg slowly worked his way to the front. The race was red flagged twice for two seprate events.  Prior to lap 20, Mike Larrison tried to avoid a spinning Jason Cox in turn four and his machine rocketed into the pit entrance off turn four. When the race resumed, Jason Blonde began to run down DeCaire but got high exiting turn four and the car went flying through the pit entrance in the same exact place Larrison did moments earlier. Luckily no one was injured. When the green flad flew on lap 21, Helberg made a daring pass on DeCaire for the lead. DeCaire then retook the lead two laps later and never looked back. The win was also worth $6000 for DeCaire. ‘ I was watching my guys down the straight-away.I was trying to keep the car straight ” explained DeCaire. ” My motor bobbled late in the race and it allowed Jo Jo to get around me. He got by me but when he went by me I could see his right rear tire was chunking up and he was sliding. He was using it a little bit more than we were. With 8 laps to go,he began backing up to me. I got back by him. It was a good win for us and a nice payday.

The inagural ‘ Xtreme Speed Challenge ‘ was a rounding success. The MSRXSS will next be in action this Wed. night at Anderson (IN) Speedway for the Must See Racing 60. For more info log onto www.mustseeracing.com

PREPERATIONS FOR XTREME SPEED CHALLENGE CONTINUE

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.
Winchester, IN – May 19, 2012 – Several teams from the TRUFUEL Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Series and the BIOBASED.US Must See Racing Supermodified Series took advantage of an open practice session Saturday afternoon at Winchester Speedway.
Ten Sprint Cars and six Supermodifieds participated in the four hour practice session. In the MSRXSS practice, Rohnert Park , CA driver, Jo Jo Helberg set the fastest time of the day. His lap of 12.88 seconds was the quickest but unofficial. Sunday’s 30 lap feature will pay $6,000 to win with an additional $500 bonus for fast time courtesy of BIOBASED.US as part of the ‘ Winners Circle Bonus ‘.
SEE PHOTOS OF THE XTREME SPEED CHALLENGE
The Supermodifieds took to the high-banks of Winchester Speedway for the first time in twenty-two years in anticipation of Sunday’s big 30 lap feature also paying $6,000 to win. Mexico, New York driver, Michael Barnes, lead all Super Modifieds with the fastest lap of the day with a 14.10 unofficial lap. Interestingly,it was the first time Barnes had ever turned a lap at the legendary speedway. “I’ve always wanted to come to Winchester and I was so exited to get here. Its kind of similar to a place we run in Connecticut, Thompson Speedway. But this is definitely like no other. I watched the Sprint Car guys and imitated what they were doing. Once I figured out where to pick the throttle up and made some changes to the car, got a little quicker as the day went on. I hope the race is exciting for the fans tomorrow.”
The only serious accident occurred when Brampton, Ontario, Canada driver, Dave McKnight, hit the turn three wall after a part broke on his Gary Morton owned #70 machine. “I’m fine ” explained McKnight.” We had a part on the car break. We’re not sure if it was the left front locator or a Heim end on the right front radius rod. We went down into three and the part broke and I had no steering and the car sailed into the fence ” McKnight was unsure if he would be able to get the car repaired in time tomorrow’s event. “We’ve had several guys offer their shops to us. We are just gonna take our time getting the car back together” concluded McKnight.
Sundays racing action begins at 2 p.m. with spectator gates opening at 10 a.m. Former multi-time USAC champion and former Indy 500 starter, Tom Bigelow, will serve as Grand Marshall. The Full Throttle Modified Circuit and Vore’s Welding Front Wheel Drive Compacts will be part of the racing extrazaganza. Jeff Abold’s NEMA Midget on Display at A&P Auto Parts in Oswego

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.

NEMA Midgets Return to Oswego Speedway August 25th

OSWEGO, NY (May 15) – For the first time in seven years the Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA) will return to Oswego Speedway on Saturday, August 25.  In an effort to reintroduce Speedway fans to NEMA Midget racing, Jeff Abold’s No. 29 midget racer will be on display at A&P Auto Parts, located at 160 E. Bridge St in Oswego, from Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19.

Abold, 22, has been a prominent runner on the NEMA stage for several seasons.  In 2011, Abold competed in eight NEMA sanctioned wing midget events, finishing in the Top 5 in each.  The second generation driver, from Baldwinsville, even managed a return trip to victory lane on September 10, picking up his third consecutive Boston Louie Memorial main event win at Seekonk Speedway in Massachusetts.

While Abold plans to compete in the first NEMA event at Oswego since International Supermodified Association (ISMA) champion Chris Perley took the win back in 2005, he is focusing his full racing efforts in 2012 on the Novelis Supermodified division at the Speedway.

“Oswego Speedway is our home track, it is right in our back yard, and it is good to be back,” said Abold.  “We’ve kind of been away for a few years, and this is the first time we are going to run weekly here, and I think we are going to enjoy it.”

abold_0139

In 2012, the NEMA Midgets will enter their 60th season of competition and both NEMA and Oswego Speedway are excited for their return to the ‘Steel Palace.’

“Having the NEMA Midgets back at Oswego is big for our Speedway and for northeast open-wheel racing, especially as a warm-up for Budweiser International Classic Weekend,” said Oswego Speedway co-owner, John Torrese.  “If you have never seen the NEMA cars fly around the ‘Steel Palace’, you won’t want to miss it.”

Accompanying the NEMA Midgets on the August 25 racing card will be the series stepping stone NEMA Lites division.  Entering their fifth season, the Lites have proven to be one of the more successful developmental divisions in open-cockpit racing.  Moving into the division in 2012 will be young Avery Stoehr, the son of NEMA Midget veteran Russ Stoehr, an 8-time feature winner at Oswego which adds into his 48 career NEMA Midget victories on tour.

Joining the NEMA Lites as a first time division in Oswego Speedway’s 62 years will be the U.S. Legend Cars.  Established in 1992 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the U.S. Legend Cars were introduced as a low-cost, budget form of racing for the weekly short track racer.  Since their inception the U.S. Legend Car Series has exploded nationwide, becoming a proving ground for up and coming young drivers, as well as a mainstay for the budget weekly racer.

“We’re very excited to have had the opportunity to put this event together for 2012,” said Torrese.  “With our Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS Series having the week off on August 25 to prepare for Budweiser International Classic Weekend, we still wanted to be sure to take advantage of the beautiful August weather in Oswego and give our loyal race fans a show.  We couldn’t be more pleased to have the folks from NEMA and the U.S. Legend Cars come on board to help make this happen.”

2011 was an exciting campaign for the NEMA Midget Series as Randy Cabral and Bertrand Motorsports came out on top of the 13-race schedule as champions with two feature wins on the season coming at Seekonk and Twin State Speedways.  Cabral will return in ’12 behind the wheel of the Bertrand No. 47, but will have a host of rivals on his heels throughout the season, including at Oswego.

The Stoehr brothers will once again be in action for the coming year with Russ driving the Dumo’s Desire No. 45 and Greg in the Stoehr No. 26b.  Brother Russ is the all-time leader in NEMA Midget wins at Oswego Speedway with eight.  His first came at the ‘Steel Palace’ in 1995, with the latest coming back in 2001.  Greg managed to pick up a NEMA feature win in 2011 at Lee USA Speedway.

Joining the Stoehr’s as potential threats to Cabral’s championship chances are Adam Cantor, Paul Scally, and Mike Horn.

New to the series in 2012 are NEMA Lites graduates Seth Carlson and Jim Santa Maria.  Each will join former Lites graduates, now full size NEMA feature winners, Todd Bertrand and Anthony Nocella.

The next event on Oswego Speedway’s racing schedule is the Mitchell’s Speedway Press Memorial Day Weekend Tripleheader on Saturday, May 26 featuring the Novelis Supermodifieds, Pathfinder Bank SBS Series, and the Race of Champions Modifieds.
