Seven top-two finishes propel Evans to 29th championship of career

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.

LITTLETON, Colo. – Ageless supermodified veteran Harold Evans, known as “H.J.” in Colorado racing circles, won his second Englewood Supermodified Association championship in a row this year, marking his 29th title in an illustrious open-wheel racing career that spans over four decades.

Evans, who began racing in 1968 and won his first ERA championship in 1979, won four of the eight ERA mains at Colorado National Speedway in 2011 and pulled away in the standings throughout the second half of the season to win by a comfortable 135-point margin over his teammate, Richie Castor.

The 60-year-old racer complimented those around him who he says made the season one of the smoothest and successful of his legendary career.

“The car was great all year and that’s a testament to the Castors,” Evans began, referring to his car owners in the Castor Racing family. “The car was just flawless and we’re very happy. I was able to do things behind the wheel that I’ve never been able to do before.”

Evans noted offseason changes he and the Castor Racing team made to his No. 3 mount that had his super hooked up better than it’s ever been before.

“We made some changes to the aerodynamics and Leary Racing Products made some improvements to our shock package and it totally changed to car for the better. Just an incredible car. I could go absolutely anywhere in any condition. High or low on a hot, greasy track or a cold surface – it didn’t make any difference,” Evans said.

Evans had the fastest super at CNS on most nights throughout the season. In addition to winning half the supermodified mains on the year, he never finished outside the top four in eight races, finishing first or second in seven of the eight mains. Evans also captured the 2011 Colorado National supermodified track championship.

“I was raised an open-wheel guy, and I have a true love for the supers,” Evans continued. “There’s no better feeling than driving a super when the car is working good. I want to thank all the people at CNS for giving us a great place to race, including Scotty Backman, Jeff Campbell, Shannon Muir and the track owners, Jim and Char Nordhaugen. It’s a fine facility and they treat us very well and we’re very thankful.”

As for future plans, Evans stressed nothing is set in stone but hinted he’s looking at more of the same in 2012.

“I’m very happy with the Castor team. My intent is to come back again, if they’ll have me. We’re going to work hard to get Richie’s car going as good as mine. That’s our focus for right now,” Evans said.

Points will be made official at the ERA’s next board meeting, coming Tuesday, November 1.

Next up for the ERA is the series’ year-end Awards Banquet, slated for Saturday, November 26 at the Elks Club in Arvada, Colorado.

Californian Vanderpool steals ERA win in season finale

Supermodified news from the Left Coast

October 17, 2011, DACONO, Colo. – Madera, California’s Kyle Vanderpool and the Don Penix race team invaded Colorado this past weekend and stole an Englewood Racing Association supermodified triumph from series regulars in the season’s final race. Vanderpool became the first non-regular to win an ERA main in several seasons, and he did it by passing the best the historic supermodified series has to offer – 2011 champion Harold Evans – on the final turn of a competitive 30-lap championship night main event at Colorado National Speedway.

Vanderpool, a 23-year-old 360 supermodified veteran in his first season racing a 410-powered super, started eighth in the 12-car main, directly behind Evans. An opening lap accident involving Chris Sheil and Joe Priselac halted the heavily anticipated race as quickly as it began. Officials cleared Sheil’s and Priselac’s racecars off the track under a red-flag condition. Priselac’s No. 51 was badly damaged.

Once the race resumed, Johnny Pickard jumped into the lead while Evans and Vanderpool began picking cars off and moving toward the front of the field.

A second red flag waved on lap 19 for Ricky Otts, an ageless Texas supermodified veteran wheeling the freshly repaired Harry Stone No. 40. A suspension part apparently failed on the Stone-owned mount, sending Otts hard into the third turn wall. Otts was OK but the car badly damaged, a sad sight for the ERA community after Stone recently repaired the car from last year’s devastating accident in the 2010 season closer.

A major shakeup at the front of the field occurred during the race’s second stoppage, when officials notified Pickard that he’d be negated two positions for jumping the initial restart. The race-long leader would restart his red No. 02 in the third position.

Pickard’s misfortune handed the lead to Evans, and the cagey veteran took control of the race with Vanderpool hot on his heels. The pair raced hard throughout the last 10 laps, giving Denver-area fans a thrill in what was one of the best supermodified races at the track in recent memory.

Vanderpool worked on Evans, pulling underneath the Castor Racing No. 3 several times but not able to complete the pass. The final lap saw Evans lead Vanderpool into turn three, when Vanderpool gave the multi-time ERA champ’s rear bumper a nudge, sending H.J. slightly up the track. Vanderpool pulled low, made the pass and went on to the big victory in hisfirst visit to the CNS three-eighths-mile oval.

Vanderpool pulled into victory lane while Evans pulled along side the California driver’s No. 31, offering some comments to the young racer before heading pitside. Vanderpool offered his thoughts in a phone interview Monday afternoon.

“What an awesome experience,” he said, still clearly filled with jubilation. “An awesome facility with a great crowd. I think Colorado National is my new favorite track. I worked on (Evans) for the last 10 laps and showed him a wheel a few times and he kept moving lower. I had made some adjustments, moved some weight around and made a shock adjustment, and our car was working great. I just barely touched him in the last turn and we were able to get the win.”

Evans, who came into the night already having clinched the ERA championship, spoke about the race.

“The win meant more to him (Vanderpool) than it did to me. He moved me in three and four, the last corner. No big deal. We had an incredible car this year; it was hooked up great by the Castors. A nearly flawless year and I’m very happy, but I’m tired, too.” Evans said.

Vanderpool, a second-generation supermodified racer, said he “fell in love with Colorado” and has every intention of coming back next season.

“We were going to run Shasta (Raceway Park, Calif.), but with the car counts so low in California we didn’t want to go race against only three or four cars. We’ve been watching the ERA for a long time, and Don and Chuck Penix gave me the opportunity to race at CNS. I have to thank them so much for the opportunity, and our sponsors NH3 Plus Industrial Refrigeration, Tioga-Sequoia Brewery in Fresno, Caps Bright Hot Coating, Shaffer Oil, Sponsornet.com and SpeedMeetsArt.com. Also, a big thanks to the ERA guys and Scotty Backman from CNS for helping us get out to Colorado and all they did for us. We’re hoping to run more next year,” Vanderpool added.

Richie Castor passed Pickard on the final lap to take third. Pickard, who led 18 laps of the affair, had to settle for fourth. Joe Gallegos capped off a solid season with a fifth-place run.

Next up for the Englwood Racing Association is the series’ annual Awards Banquet, slated for Saturday, November 26 at the Elks Club in Arvada, Colorado.

Oct. 15 ERA finish: KYLE VANDERPOOL, Harold Evans, Rich Castor Jr., Johnny Pickard, Joe Gallegos, Ian Tolen, Mike Anderson, Matt Griffin, Ricky Otts, Joe Priselac, Chris Sheil, Stevie Gallegos (DNS).

Harold Evans wins fourth ERA main of season

Supermodified news from the Left Coast

For Immediate Release

Contact: Englewood Racing Association

keith@newconceptracemedia.com

September 19, 2011-DACONO, Colo. – Harold “H.J.” Evans wheeled his Castor Racing No. 3 to his fourth Englewood Racing Association supermodified main event win of the season Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway. Evans made the winning pass on Chris Sheil on lap 17 of the 25-lap main to score the victory.

Larry Lapoint and Brian Pacheco started on the row for the 12-car feature, the best ERA field since the May 21 opener which started 14 west coast-style supers. Pacheco got a good start from the outside row, jumped out to the point and led the opening circuits before Lapoint moved past while working lap three.

Lapoint, making his first ERA appearance of the season, proceeded to run strong out front and lead until lap 10, when Sheil muscled his Mountain States Toyota No. 33 past the veteran racer to take the lead.

Sheil, attempting to capture his first ERA feature win, raced out front while Evans moved past Lapoint and into second from his seventh-place starting position. It took the defending ERA champion only five laps to move past Sheil and take the lead. Evans held the top spot to the finish, pulling out to a commanding 4.4-second lead before the checkers waved.

Sheil fended off challenges from Evans’ teammate Richie Castor to hold on to second. The strong run marked Sheil’s third runner-up finish in a row as the former midget champion continues to improve behind the wheel of an ultra-powerful supermodified.

Castor took third, while Lapoint faded to fourth. Previous race winner Johnny Pickard couldn’t make it two in a row and finished fifth after starting deep in the 12-car field.

Evans set the race’s fast lap at an impressive 14.284 around CNS’s three-eighths-mile oval. Six of the 12 starters – Evans, Sheil, Castor, Lapoint, Pickard and Joe Gallegos – laid down laps under the 15-second bracket in the feature in what was one of the best ERA fields, competition wise, in recent memory.

Evans’ win should clinch the Colorado driver’s second ERA championship in a row. He now has a commanding lead over Castor, who is one of only three drivers, along with Evans and Pickard, to win this season.

One race remains on the 2011 ERA schedule. The supermodified season will close Saturday, October 15 with another 25-lapper at Colorado National.

September 17 ERA finish: HAROLD EVANS, Chris Sheil, Rich Castor Jr., Larry Lapoint, Johnny Pickard, Joe Gallegos, Joe Priselac, Brian Pacheco, Stevie Gallegos, Mike Anderson, Ian Tolen, Matt Griffin (DNS).

Lapoint and Pickard won the eight-lap heat races.
