Seven top-two finishes propel Evans to 29th championship of career

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.

LITTLETON, Colo. – Ageless supermodified veteran Harold Evans, known as “H.J.” in Colorado racing circles, won his second Englewood Supermodified Association championship in a row this year, marking his 29th title in an illustrious open-wheel racing career that spans over four decades.

Evans, who began racing in 1968 and won his first ERA championship in 1979, won four of the eight ERA mains at Colorado National Speedway in 2011 and pulled away in the standings throughout the second half of the season to win by a comfortable 135-point margin over his teammate, Richie Castor.

The 60-year-old racer complimented those around him who he says made the season one of the smoothest and successful of his legendary career.

“The car was great all year and that’s a testament to the Castors,” Evans began, referring to his car owners in the Castor Racing family. “The car was just flawless and we’re very happy. I was able to do things behind the wheel that I’ve never been able to do before.”

Evans noted offseason changes he and the Castor Racing team made to his No. 3 mount that had his super hooked up better than it’s ever been before.

“We made some changes to the aerodynamics and Leary Racing Products made some improvements to our shock package and it totally changed to car for the better. Just an incredible car. I could go absolutely anywhere in any condition. High or low on a hot, greasy track or a cold surface – it didn’t make any difference,” Evans said.

Evans had the fastest super at CNS on most nights throughout the season. In addition to winning half the supermodified mains on the year, he never finished outside the top four in eight races, finishing first or second in seven of the eight mains. Evans also captured the 2011 Colorado National supermodified track championship.

“I was raised an open-wheel guy, and I have a true love for the supers,” Evans continued. “There’s no better feeling than driving a super when the car is working good. I want to thank all the people at CNS for giving us a great place to race, including Scotty Backman, Jeff Campbell, Shannon Muir and the track owners, Jim and Char Nordhaugen. It’s a fine facility and they treat us very well and we’re very thankful.”

As for future plans, Evans stressed nothing is set in stone but hinted he’s looking at more of the same in 2012.

“I’m very happy with the Castor team. My intent is to come back again, if they’ll have me. We’re going to work hard to get Richie’s car going as good as mine. That’s our focus for right now,” Evans said.

Points will be made official at the ERA’s next board meeting, coming Tuesday, November 1.

Next up for the ERA is the series’ year-end Awards Banquet, slated for Saturday, November 26 at the Elks Club in Arvada, Colorado.

Californian Vanderpool steals ERA win in season finale

Supermodified news from the Left Coast

By Keith Shampine

October 17, 2011, DACONO, Colo. – Madera, California’s Kyle Vanderpool and the Don Penix race team invaded Colorado this past weekend and stole an Englewood Racing Association supermodified triumph from series regulars in the season’s final race. Vanderpool became the first non-regular to win an ERA main in several seasons, and he did it by passing the best the historic supermodified series has to offer – 2011 champion Harold Evans – on the final turn of a competitive 30-lap championship night main event at Colorado National Speedway.

Vanderpool, a 23-year-old 360 supermodified veteran in his first season racing a 410-powered super, started eighth in the 12-car main, directly behind Evans. An opening lap accident involving Chris Sheil and Joe Priselac halted the heavily anticipated race as quickly as it began. Officials cleared Sheil’s and Priselac’s racecars off the track under a red-flag condition. Priselac’s No. 51 was badly damaged.

Once the race resumed, Johnny Pickard jumped into the lead while Evans and Vanderpool began picking cars off and moving toward the front of the field.

A second red flag waved on lap 19 for Ricky Otts, an ageless Texas supermodified veteran wheeling the freshly repaired Harry Stone No. 40. A suspension part apparently failed on the Stone-owned mount, sending Otts hard into the third turn wall. Otts was OK but the car badly damaged, a sad sight for the ERA community after Stone recently repaired the car from last year’s devastating accident in the 2010 season closer.

A major shakeup at the front of the field occurred during the race’s second stoppage, when officials notified Pickard that he’d be negated two positions for jumping the initial restart. The race-long leader would restart his red No. 02 in the third position.

Pickard’s misfortune handed the lead to Evans, and the cagey veteran took control of the race with Vanderpool hot on his heels. The pair raced hard throughout the last 10 laps, giving Denver-area fans a thrill in what was one of the best supermodified races at the track in recent memory.

Vanderpool worked on Evans, pulling underneath the Castor Racing No. 3 several times but not able to complete the pass. The final lap saw Evans lead Vanderpool into turn three, when Vanderpool gave the multi-time ERA champ’s rear bumper a nudge, sending H.J. slightly up the track. Vanderpool pulled low, made the pass and went on to the big victory in hisfirst visit to the CNS three-eighths-mile oval.

Vanderpool pulled into victory lane while Evans pulled along side the California driver’s No. 31, offering some comments to the young racer before heading pitside. Vanderpool offered his thoughts in a phone interview Monday afternoon.

“What an awesome experience,” he said, still clearly filled with jubilation. “An awesome facility with a great crowd. I think Colorado National is my new favorite track. I worked on (Evans) for the last 10 laps and showed him a wheel a few times and he kept moving lower. I had made some adjustments, moved some weight around and made a shock adjustment, and our car was working great. I just barely touched him in the last turn and we were able to get the win.”

Evans, who came into the night already having clinched the ERA championship, spoke about the race.

“The win meant more to him (Vanderpool) than it did to me. He moved me in three and four, the last corner. No big deal. We had an incredible car this year; it was hooked up great by the Castors. A nearly flawless year and I’m very happy, but I’m tired, too.” Evans said.

Vanderpool, a second-generation supermodified racer, said he “fell in love with Colorado” and has every intention of coming back next season.

“We were going to run Shasta (Raceway Park, Calif.), but with the car counts so low in California we didn’t want to go race against only three or four cars. We’ve been watching the ERA for a long time, and Don and Chuck Penix gave me the opportunity to race at CNS. I have to thank them so much for the opportunity, and our sponsors NH3 Plus Industrial Refrigeration, Tioga-Sequoia Brewery in Fresno, Caps Bright Hot Coating, Shaffer Oil, Sponsornet.com and SpeedMeetsArt.com. Also, a big thanks to the ERA guys and Scotty Backman from CNS for helping us get out to Colorado and all they did for us. We’re hoping to run more next year,” Vanderpool added.

Richie Castor passed Pickard on the final lap to take third. Pickard, who led 18 laps of the affair, had to settle for fourth. Joe Gallegos capped off a solid season with a fifth-place run.

Next up for the Englwood Racing Association is the series’ annual Awards Banquet, slated for Saturday, November 26 at the Elks Club in Arvada, Colorado.

Oct. 15 ERA finish: KYLE VANDERPOOL, Harold Evans, Rich Castor Jr., Johnny Pickard, Joe Gallegos, Ian Tolen, Mike Anderson, Matt Griffin, Ricky Otts, Joe Priselac, Chris Sheil, Stevie Gallegos (DNS).

Harold Evans wins fourth ERA main of season

Supermodified news from the Left Coast

For Immediate Release

Contact: Englewood Racing Association

keith@newconceptracemedia.com

September 19, 2011-DACONO, Colo. – Harold “H.J.” Evans wheeled his Castor Racing No. 3 to his fourth Englewood Racing Association supermodified main event win of the season Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway. Evans made the winning pass on Chris Sheil on lap 17 of the 25-lap main to score the victory.

Larry Lapoint and Brian Pacheco started on the row for the 12-car feature, the best ERA field since the May 21 opener which started 14 west coast-style supers. Pacheco got a good start from the outside row, jumped out to the point and led the opening circuits before Lapoint moved past while working lap three.

Lapoint, making his first ERA appearance of the season, proceeded to run strong out front and lead until lap 10, when Sheil muscled his Mountain States Toyota No. 33 past the veteran racer to take the lead.

Sheil, attempting to capture his first ERA feature win, raced out front while Evans moved past Lapoint and into second from his seventh-place starting position. It took the defending ERA champion only five laps to move past Sheil and take the lead. Evans held the top spot to the finish, pulling out to a commanding 4.4-second lead before the checkers waved.

Sheil fended off challenges from Evans’ teammate Richie Castor to hold on to second. The strong run marked Sheil’s third runner-up finish in a row as the former midget champion continues to improve behind the wheel of an ultra-powerful supermodified.

Castor took third, while Lapoint faded to fourth. Previous race winner Johnny Pickard couldn’t make it two in a row and finished fifth after starting deep in the 12-car field.

Evans set the race’s fast lap at an impressive 14.284 around CNS’s three-eighths-mile oval. Six of the 12 starters – Evans, Sheil, Castor, Lapoint, Pickard and Joe Gallegos – laid down laps under the 15-second bracket in the feature in what was one of the best ERA fields, competition wise, in recent memory.

Evans’ win should clinch the Colorado driver’s second ERA championship in a row. He now has a commanding lead over Castor, who is one of only three drivers, along with Evans and Pickard, to win this season.

One race remains on the 2011 ERA schedule. The supermodified season will close Saturday, October 15 with another 25-lapper at Colorado National.

September 17 ERA finish: HAROLD EVANS, Chris Sheil, Rich Castor Jr., Larry Lapoint, Johnny Pickard, Joe Gallegos, Joe Priselac, Brian Pacheco, Stevie Gallegos, Mike Anderson, Ian Tolen, Matt Griffin (DNS).

Lapoint and Pickard won the eight-lap heat races.

Pueblo, CO racer halts Castor Racing’s ERA stranglehold

August 28, 2011-DACONO, Colo. – Johnny Pickard won his first Englewood Racing Association supermodified main event of the season Saturday night Colorado National Speedway, ending a dominating run for Castor Racing that had seen either Richie Castor or Harold Evans triumph in each of the first five ERA features of the season.

Pickard, who had finished third in his first three starts of the season, made his fourth showing easily his best since last summer, when he reeled off three straight wins in his first three appearances of 2010.

Pickard was slated to start ninth but moved up a row when a starter in front of him pulled off before the green. A terrific opening lap had Pickard second after one circuit, and past Brian Pacheco for the lead by the completion of lap two.

“We had a good break at the beginning, for sure,” Pickard said after the win. “We needed it, too. We’ve been boxed in so many times this year on the starts. (The starts) just haven’t gone our way. This week, the outside didn’t move and the inside went. I got by some cars on the inside and then went high to take the lead.”

Pickard, who said his home-built No. 02 was the best it had been all season, had to fend off challenges from Chris Sheil, who was also very strong in his Mikula Racing No. 33. Sheil followed Pickard to the front and ran in the second position from lap two all the way to the end, pressuring the winner throughout the 25-lap affair.

“I was glad to see him up there,” Pickard said, speaking of Sheil. “He’s a good young driver, and runs hard. I took to the top and was running really high on the racetrack. He had the bottom working and gave me a good run, but I was able to keep great momentum on the top.

“I’m glad he was there racing me because now no one can say I didn’t earn this one. Last year when we won, people said it was just because we started up front. They made the rule for us to not start up front if we didn’t have any points and we had to work really hard to get one this season. Sheil, Harold (Evans), Richie (Castor) and some others are running very strong this year.”

Sheil, who’s been knocking on the door but is yet to win an ERA main, ended up crossing the stripe a few car-lengths back of the winner. It was the second runner-up finish in a row for the Mountain States Toyota-sponsored racer after he missed a race due to a blown engine.

Castor recorded his fifth top-five result of the season with a third-place run.

Evans had finished either first or second in every race of the year until this past weekend. The ERA point leader ended up fourth, while Joe Gallegos rounded out the top five for the third time this year.

Pickard, who travels about 120 miles to CNS from his Pueblo, Colo., base, took time to thank the people who helped him to his first win of the season.

“Of course, I have to thank my brother, Mike. He’s in the shop almost every night, along with his girlfriend. I work two jobs, so I’m not out there much. Mike’s always at the shop working on something. Also, thanks to Jeff Urkel and my wife, Jennifer, for the all the help,” Pickard said.

The ERA supers have two races remaining before the doors close on another season. Next up is a Saturday, Sept. 17 date at CNS. The season closes at CNS on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Aug. 27 ERA finish: JOHNNY PICKARD, Chris Sheil, Rich Castor Jr., Harold Evans, Joe Gallegos, Joe Priselac, Brian Pacheco, Matt Griffin, Stevie Gallegos, Ian Tolen (DNS), Matt Gilbert (DNS).

Harold Evans by Joe Starr

Aug. 1, 2011-DACONO, Colo. – Harold Evans proved once again Saturday night that he’s the man to beat in Englewood Racing Association supermodified competition at Colorado National Speedway in 2011.

Evans wheeled his Castor Racing-owned No. 3 to victory for the third time this season on Saturday night, passing early leader Chris Sheil on lap 12 of the 25-lapper and racing to a 1.4-second win over Sheil.

Matt Griffin and Sheil started from the front row with Sheil jumping out to the lead aboard his Mikula Racing, Mountain States Toyota-backed silver No. 33. Sheil, who was running a new engine with no practice time on it, ran strong out front while Evans worked his way through the 10-car field from his eighth-place starting position.

It didn’t take long for Evans to flex his muscle. Some strong maneuvers through the field and the aid of a couple early-race cautions allowed the Colorado racing veteran to close in on Sheil before the race hit halfway.

Evans made his way past the former Rocky Mountain Midget champion with a pass on lap 12.  A caution for Matt Gilbert running out of fuel slowed the field for the final time on lap 20.

But Evans proved too strong for the rest of the ERA competitors, pulling out to a comfortable gap over the last five circuits and claiming another big win by the aforementioned 1.4-second margin.\

Sheil did a nice job fending off challenges from 2010 three-time ERA A-main victor Johnny Pickard to secure the runner-up finish for his best result of the season. Pickard was third for the third race in a row, while Evans’ teammate and the only other driver to win an ERA main this season, Richie Castor, made his way from the ninth starting spot to fourth. Joe Gallegos was fifth, which marked his third top five of the season.

Sixth through 10th were Gilbert, Joe Prisalec, Griffin, Stevie Gallegos and Ian Tolen.

Evans set the race’s fast lap, and he did it on the 24th and second-to-last circuit. The quick time was a 14.598, about a tenth better than Castor and Pickard’s fast times which were both in the 14.6 bracket. Sheil’s best lap was a 14.880, while Prisalec was the fifth-fastest car according to the speed charts with a best time of 15.166.

The ERA supermodifieds have three races remaining on the 2011 schedule. Next up is Aug. 27. The season closes with a pair of fall races Sept. 17 and Oct. 15. All remaining races are at the CNS three-eighths-mile oval.

DACONO, Colo. – Richie Castor beat the competition and the weather Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway to win his second race of the 2011 Englewood Racing Association season.

The ERA supermodifieds took the CNS racing surface as the first race of the night when rain moved into the Denver area and forced the supers back to their pit stalls. After a delay, weather cleared and officials dried the track, giving the supers a chance to put on a high-speed, open-wheel show for CNS fans for the fourth time this year.

Castor started fourth in 25-lap main and moved his Castor Racing No. 3 past early leader Joe Priselac on lap eight to take the top position. A yellow slowed the field on lap 10 before the rest of the race went green to checkered, allowing Castor to open up a big four-second lead on point leader and teammate Harold Evans before the checkers waved.

“The race went well and we’re really pleased,” Castor said after the win. “Joe (Priselac) and I kind of got out from the pack in the early going and I was able to make the inside pass in (turns) three and four. It’s rained here for seven straight days, and then rained again right before we went out. So the track was really green, but the lower two grooves were still pretty good. If you got up past the outside groove, it was slick.”

Evans held on for second, making it another one-two finish for Castor Racing. Johnny Pickard was third for the second week in a row. Priselac slipped to fourth and Stevie Gallegos rounded out the top five.

As mentioned, the win marked Castor’s second of the season but more impressively it kept Castor Racing undefeated on the 2011 campaign. In four races Castor has won twice while Evans also has a pair of triumphs in the purple No. 3 team car. The two are out front in the point race, as well, with Evans holding solid point lead over Castor and the rest of the ERA field.

“You can’t ask for much more than four wins in four races. We’ve had a great year as a team. For me, personally, it hasn’t been the best year with the wreck on opening night, but for the team it couldn’t be better. I’d like to thank my dad, family, Leary Racing Shocks and USA Performance Engines for the help. I’d also like to thank all the guys (ERA super teams) who came out tonight. We had a short field, but I’d like to thank the teams that made it and raced.”

Castor added that he dedicates Saturday’s win to longtime Colorado supermodified car builder and Hoosier tire dealer Jerry Malloy, who passed away Monday morning after an illness. Malloy was a great supporter and fan of supermodified racing in the Denver area, and he was a 2011 inductee to the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame.

The ERA supers are back in action in two weeks with a July 30 date at CNS. The race will cap a busy month for the ERA which will see three races in five July weekends.

July 16 finish: Richie Castor, Harold Evans, Johnny Pickard, Joe Prisalec, Stevie Gallegos, Brian Pacheco, Matt Griffin, Joe Gallegos, Ian Tolen.

Evans Captures Second ERA Main of Season Sunday at CNS

DACONO, Colo. – Harold Evans is the first two-time winner of the 2011 Englewood Racing Association supermodified season.

The cagey veteran backed up his opening night win with another fine drive this past Sunday on a hot night in the Denver, Colo., area.

Starting eighth, Evans took advantage of a caution on lap seven for a blown engine on the No. 33 Chris Sheil machine. The caution turned to a full red-flag stoppage to tend to the oiled-down track from Sheil’s engine woes. At this point, Joe Priselac held the point with Evans second, Ira Castor third, Johnny Pickard fourth and Richie Castor rounding out the top five.

Priselac led the field down to the restart but a half straightaway later Evans darted his purple No. 3 to the outside while peering through thick dust from the speedy dry. Evans and Prisalec proceeded to race side by side until the ERA point leader took the lead for good on lap nine.

Most fans expected Evans to pull away from Priselac and the rest of the 12-car field for an easy second feature victory in three races, but that wasn’t the case as Priselac hung tough with the multi-time supermodified champion.

Evans, Priselac, Pickard and R. Castor ran nose to tail throughout the middle stages of the affair before a late-race caution bunched up the field for a green-white-checkered restart. The running order saw no change in the final laps as Evans crossed the stripe a couple car-lengths in front of Priselac for the win. Pickard took third in his first appearance of the 2011 season. Last race’s feature winner R. Castor claimed fourth, while Ira Castor filled out the top five.

Evans commented on the hot night at CNS which saw him drive to another ERA feature victory.

“I don’t know if we would have won if it weren’t for the red flag for Chris Sheil blowing his engine. If the race went green, I think we would have been able to catch Joe, but I’m not sure we would have had enough time to get by.

“The speedy dry tensed everyone up. I think it gave me an advantage because once I got out front, I really didn’t have to worry about anyone going up high because the outside groove wasn’t there. Once I realized I couldn’t pull away from those guys, I drove a little more defensively and protected the bottom. The late caution probably helped me, if anything, because then I didn’t have to worry about any lap traffic.”

Evans turned a fast time of 14.594 around CNS’s three-eighths-mile oval on his way to the win – nearly three tenths of a second quicker than his closest competitors’ times, although he wasn’t able to open up a big gap between himself and the rest of the top five.

The 60-year-old racer credits his car owners for much of his success thus far in 2011.

“First of all, I have to thank the Castors,” Evans commented. “The car is very well prepared. The whole season has been trouble-free. The car is just excellent. We’ve made some minute changes with stagger here and there and that’s it. I’d also like to say how great it is to see some of the other cars coming out to help the field. Guys like the Pickards and Larry Lapoint getting to the track is great for the ERA, and the cream is certainly rising; there are a lot of championship drivers in the field right now.”

Evans now holds a fairly comfortable point lead over his teammate R. Castor after three races.

Five races remain on the 2011 slate with the next coming Saturday, July 16 at Colorado National.

July 3 finish:Harold Evans, Joe Priselac, Johnny Pickard, Richie Castor, Ira Castor, Stevie Gallegos, Matt Gilbert, Larry Lapoint, Joe Gallegos, Ian Tolen, Matt Griffin, Chris Sheil.

June 5, 2011

Dacono, CO. – After a blown motor two weeks ago, Chris Sheil driving the Mikula Racing ERA Supermodified Mountain States Toyota finished a strong 3rd in the 25 Lap “A” Feature Saturday night at Colorado National Speedway.

With a backup motor installed, the day started off with very warm temperatures and slick track conditions, Sheil started on the pole for the second of two 6 lap Qualifier’s and finished with a respectable 3rd place. “After an unfortunate ending to our season opener with our primary motor letting go we were forced to put our back up motor in”, said Sheil. “We tried some new set up packages to start off the day to get every bit of speed out of the car possible. We were pretty decent in practice and made some slight adjustments going into our heat race. After finding quickly that the car was free off of the corner it was obvious that there were some more adjustments to be made so we could be competitive in the feature”.

With the temperature cooling off for the start of the “A” Feature, Sheil starting second row inside, shot into the second position with pole sitter Richie Castor JR. taking the lead. Sheil ran the second position most of the race until Veteran Supermodified driver Harold Evan passed Sheil for position. At the end, Sheil finished with a strong 3rd place finish and gaining valuable points for the night.

“We made some handling adjustments to the car in addition to a fuel setting adjustment in time for the feature. I knew it was going to be hard to run with the 2 (Richie Castor JR.) and 3 (Harold Evans) cars as they were looking quick from the start of the day. We ended the feature in 3rd and I am very pleased with the way we rebounded from our qualifier race. The crew did a great job fine tuning the car which allowed for a great points night”, Sheil stated afterwards.

“I want to thank my family, crew, and sponsors for all of the efforts Saturday night”.

Next race on the schedule will be on July 3rd at Colorado National Speedway for the Mountain States Toyota “Night at the Races”.
