South Amherst Ohio resident Bobby Dawson went into Sandusky (OH) Speedway last Saturday night and blasted his way to the front getting the win in the 30 lap Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) presented by Town Money Saver feature race. The third race of the 2011 schedule this was Dawson’s second of the young season as he also won the first Sandusky visit just two weeks ago. This was the third MSA career victory for Dawson and the No. 28 Reed Salvage led team.

With the possibility over bad weather in the area, the Sandusky Speedway management wasted little times in get the action off. No sooner heats where completed than the feature races started. The MSA feature was the second event on tap as the 15 car field was pushed to life. A few pace laps later, a wave to the fans and the race was on as pole sitter Denny Fisher went straight to the point like a bullet while outside front row starter Jim Paller dropped in second. Just a short way into the race the pace was slowed as a caution would fly when Rookie driver A J Lesiecki found himself stopped at the top of turn three with a broken race car. The No. 8 car of Dave Shullick Jr. also went pit side for some pit crew attention. However, Shullick Jr. did rejoin the field at the tail. Just a quick clean up on this night and it was back to racing action. Fisher continued to set the pace as the field scattered for positions behind him. Dawson, who had started seventh in the field, was working his way to the front picking off one car at a time. The two Stout Team cars of Liquid Lou Cicconi and fast qualifier Trent Stephens where both coming as well at a very fast pace.

As laps where laid down at a staggering pace, Dawson would sail past Fisher going into turn one and off of turn two he was the leader just before the halfway point. Once in front in clean air Dawson could now settle down and run his line. Both Cicconi and Stephens would move into contention to challenge for the top spot. But Dawson would have nothing to do with it, as he held his own. At one point Cicconi had a shot as lapped traffic came into play and he and Dawson rubbed tires. But, it was just not meant to be as Dawson went on to get a very popular victory with the Ohio fans taking the checkered flag. Cicconi finished second, Stephens grabbed third, Fisher, and Paller rounded out the top five. Stephens’s fast time of the day was 14.592 around the famed oval. The two heat winners included Fisher and Jon Henes. The 30 lap feature race was slowed by just one yellow flag.

“You know something, I have to thank my crew, all the guys, the Reed’s for everything, level

performance, that thing was again on rails,” stated the happy winner. “We made a little spring change on it before the feature and the car just hooked up and went anywhere I wanted. We come up on some lapped cars there at the end and Lou snuck a tire in on me, we bumped a little bite, but like he said that’s just hard racing. To win two in a row is just fantastic. The really came to me, I mean it just got so comfortable. I went by Paller on the low side, Denny on the high side, and I knew when I put the car there it was going to stick. I drove it in a ton, it just planted and came off the corner. It was just smooth sailing from there,” finished Dawson.

“We had a good run actually,” said runner up Cicconi. “We where struggling all night, we tried something with the car that was totally different, and it worked real good. We worked good on the outside, which is a first for us. When I won at ACE (NC) I was making fun of Bobby Dawson saying he was to old. I will never do that again, because he is kicking my butt. I was just trying to drive smooth and fast hoping for lapped traffic because I knew that was the only chance I had to pass him,” finished Cicconi.

Third place Stephens has finished in top three of all the first three MSA 2011 races. “We just seem to be missing it by .01 seconds,” stated Stephens. “I mean, I can’t complain, three top three finishes that’s real good. But, the crew is working just as hard as they ever had, eventually we will hit it right. Hopefully we will win one here sometime. I could tell I was keeping up with them, and if I got a good turn in I could catch them a little, I was hoping for more cautions. 30 laps just wasn’t long enough to run them all the way down,” finished Stephens.

Sandusky Speedway Action

News from the MidwestBy Bob Stascak
Reeds Salvage presented “The Open Wheel Special” on Saturday night June 4, 2011 at Sandusky Speedway. The Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) made their second appearence in as many weeks. Trent Stephens topped the field with a qualifying time of 14.592. The MSA heat race winners were veteran drivers Denny Fisher and Jon Henes.
The thirty lap Midwest Supermodified Association feature saw veteran driver Denny Fisher lead from the pole followed by Jim Paller, Tim Ice, Brandon Fisher and Bobby Dawson. Fisher opened up a two car length lead over Paller before the yellow waved on lap eight for A.J. Lesiecki who broke in turn three.
When the green flag waved the top five running order was D.Fisher, Paller, Dawson, B.Fisher and Jon Henes. Lou Cicconi advanced into the top five using both the high and low sides of the track to his advantage. Bobby Dawson however was also gaining ground on D.Fisher and took the lead on lap fifteen as Cicconi moved into second followed by Trent Stephens. D.Fisher and Paller would round out the top five positions.
The top three cars of Dawson, Cicconi and Stephens set a torrid pace and had opened up a front straight advantage over the rest of the field. The leaders did an incredible job as they wove through the back markers as the laps counted down. Just as he had done two short weeks ago, veteran driver Bobby Dawson brought home the checkered flag to score his second Midwest Supermodified Association feature win in a row.
Other Action
The Buckeye Super Sprints made their first Sandusky Speedway appearence of the season and their thirty lap feature was up first this evening. Danny Shirey and Talon Stephens led the thirteen car field to the green flag. Stephens took the lead before the yellow flag waved for a tangle involving Frank Neill and Danny Shirey.
The restart saw Joey Wyckoff bring out the caution for a broken stabilizer arm. On this restart Stephens took to the outside groove to shoot into the lead. Mike McVetta advanced into second from his sixth starting spot and was followed by D.Shirey, Joe Speakman and Frank Neill. The race was red flagged on lap five as Mike Kunz made hard contact with the front straight wall, he was not injured.
When the race resumed it was a battle for the lead between Stephens and McVetta as the lead duo pulled away from the rest of the pack. Stephens took command of the lead followed by McVetta, D.Shirey, Neill and Kevin Shirey to round out the top five running order.
Stephens and McVetta had nearly a full straightaway lead over third place D. Shirey as they wove their way through the lap cars. When the checkered flag waved it was Talon Stephens taking the win with Mike McVetta finishing second after putting up a strong challenge for the lead.
The thirty lap Modified feature saw Nick Chmara and John White lead the field to the green flag with Chmara taking the lead before a multi car tangle on the back stretch that involved Matt Marlowe, Bernie Cook and Dave Beverly. None of the drivers were injured and Beverly was the only car that wasn’t able to return to the line up. On the restart it was Amsdell who took the lead followed by Chmara, Mario Diano, John White and Jim Blagg. Amsdell had opened up an impressive lead at this early stage of the race. Blagg gave chase to Amsdell as he moved into second position on lap eight. Mario Diano held third followed by Matt Marlowe and Chmara. Amsdells lead was erased when Klinect had a flat tire on lap eleven. The side by side battle for the lead between Amsdell and Blagg was brought to a halt on lap thirteen when Marlowe came to a stop on the front straight. Amsdell and Blagg resumed their battle for the lead with Blagg working the outside groove. Kenny Phillips brought out the yellow on lap seventeen for his spin in turn one. Amsdell and Blagg opened up an eight car length advantage over third place Diano with Chmara and Jason Drew rounding out the top five running order. With three laps to go Blagg pulled along side of Amsdell and took command of the lead on lap twenty eight. Blagg held off Amsdell for the final two circuits to win tonights action packed Modified feature race.

Dawson wins MSA Sandusky Run

News from the MidwestVeteran Racer Takes Second Career MSA Victory

MSA Media
May 22, 2011
Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) presented by Town Money Saver driver Bobby Dawson served up notice at Sandusky (OH) Speedway that he is a driver to be reckoned with in 2011. At the second stop of the MSA 13 race schedule Dawson bested the field on a rain cool night at the northern Ohio track capturing his second career MSA checkered flag. And in the process delivered up a very fine Anniversary present to his lovely wife in the form of a dominating win. With the initial push to the front, and sailing by then race leader Denny Fisher, Dawson won in convincing style coming from his seventh starting spot in the 30 lap feature.

Pole sitter Jim Paller and Denny Fisher brought the field to the green for the start of the 30 lap marathon. No sooner had the green dropped and the yellow would fly as 2010 MSA Champion Charlie Schultz got tangled in turn one and spun. Quickly pushing Schultz back off the field was realigned and the race got under way with Fisher shooting to the front from outside, then dropping to the bottom of the Speedway. The yellow, however, would fly twice in the first four laps as Kyle Edwards first spun off turn one and “Liquid” Lou Cicconi sailed off turn four. Cicconi got a new tire and tagged the tail.

Once racing resumed Fisher started laying down some very fast laps, but it was short lived as the 28 Reeds Salvage machine of Dawson was in a hurry and wasted no time at all driving right on by and into the lead. Just ten laps into the race and Jon Henes spun in turn three catching Schultz up as well. Schultz went pit side but was able to return as did Henes, once he was restarted. Racing resumed and Dawson wasted little time setting the pace, but again, it didn’t last long because the yellow came out on lap 13, which then quickly turned to red flag conditions.  Henes, who had only recently rebuilt the car from a hard crash at the season opener at Ace Speedway, had spun again in turn four and as Schultz tried to steer clear, he caught the wall coming off turn four. Also in the melee was Kyle Reed and Matt Palmer. Schultz’s night was done as he exited on the hook, while all others restarted and fell in line at the back of the field.

The cars would take time to get some more fuel while under this red flag before the action resumed.  With the race back underway Dawson continued to set the pace to the half way point as Fisher clung too second,  while a pair of guns in the form of Trent Stephens and Dave Shullick Jr. started to take aim at Fisher after starting in the sixth row of the 18 car field.

Dawson set a blistering pace as laps now started clicking off in record time. Only one more caution would fly with just a few laps to go when Fisher’s car would stall out in turn one ending his valiant run in the front running order. Now with both Stephens and Shullick Jr. breathing down his tail pipes it looked like Dawson had to do some managing. There seemed to be nothing to it once the green was dropped Dawson rocketed out by several car lengths and won with ease. Followed by Stephens, Shullick Jr., Tim Ice in fourth, and Jim Paller rounded out the top five. Stephens set fast time with a lap of 14.453 as both Fisher and Schultz won the heat races.

“The car was on rails,” said Dawson. “We took a big swing at it, early on we where tight and in the heat race we where tight. We took a run at it and did some crazy things to the car, and it hooked up, this car was on rails. The performance of the motor and everything was just fantastic. I was pedaling it the car was working so good. That car was out to win tonight,” finished the happy winner.

“Just a long night we had a lot of issues earlier tonight,” noted third place Shullick Jr. “We had the motor half way out of this thing, missed qualifying, started at the tail of our heat, just one of those nights. The car was good, not great, we could get them on restarts. But, when you don’t have a great car you just have to drive smart and I think that is what we did tonight. We come out of here with a really good third place finish, these guys worked hard all day, they deserved this finish. I had no idea earlier today, I was just walking around in street clothes and thought it was pretty much over. But the guys worked really hard and did an amazing job,” finished the second generation driver.

For the second MSA race in a row Trent Stephens found himself in the runner up position. “I think I had the car to beat. We where fast all day long, I mean just really fast. My feature was going really good just taking my time. Once I finally got to the front my nose wing just folded up, I lost all the down force then. That pretty much ended my night. Bitter sweet, because I knew I had a faster car. We should have won that one, I know I had the faster car,” finished Stephens.

“Liquid” Lou Amazes at MSA Ace Season Opener

ALTAMAHAW, NC— Lou Cicconi actually had time to collect his thoughts as the Midwest Super Modifieds Association rocketed around Ace Speedway.

A comfortable lead afforded that rare opportunity during Friday night’s high-speed show.

“Once I got out front I was pacing myself because I didn’t want to use it up,” he said later, referring to his No. 49 car while soaking up the atmosphere of Victory Lane.

Cicconi gained control on an early restart and bolted away to win the 50-lap feature for the Midwest Super Modifieds, a touring series of powerful winged cars.

The driver from Aston, Pa., who some five hours earlier nearly established a track record with a qualifying lap of 13.251 seconds, led the final 36 laps.

Trent Stephens of Ravenna, Ohio, was the runner-up. Mark Sammut of Ontario placed third as fans packed the grandstands to watch the season opener for the circuit that’s primary based in Ohio.

“I got the five (laps) to go and I was like, ‘All right, probably should try something’ and I was a little bit too far away,” Stephens said.

“A great race from my point of view. Had a big turnout. It was pretty nice racing in front of a big crowd the first race of the year.”

Sammut’s No. 78 car led eight laps before Cicconi took command.

Bobby Dawson of South Amherst, Ohio, came in fourth. Joey Scanlon of Salem, N.H., finished fifth.

Meanwhile, a scary situation snuffed out Burt Myers’ much-anticipated Super Modifieds debut nearly as quickly as it began — and landed the star driver in the hospital.

The reigning champion of Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem and the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, who would have carried a proverbial banner as the only competitor from the Southeast in Friday’s main event, was ensnared in a fiery wreck on his second practice lap.

Myers, piloting the No. 52 car owned by Super Modifieds president Randy Burch, crashed hard into a portion of Ace’s concrete outside wall between turns one and two.

The car, while disintegrating and catching on fire, hopped airborne, knocking down some billboards and melting other signs stationed above the concrete outside wall.

Ace general manager Brad Allen said track personnel needed 90 minutes to clean up and perform repairs to the fencing.

What remained of the destroyed Super Modifieds car was scooped into pieces and hauled away. Myers, suffering from possible broken ribs, was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center.

CHASING RECORDS AT BRISTOL TO BE HELD SAT. MARCH 19

From speedtv.com (see link below)via Carol Haynes ISMA PR

Worlds Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials At Bristol Motor Speedway A variety of competitors to chase records at the ‘Worlds Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials’…

Ford NASCAR drivers in a street legal Mustang, a Tony Stewart-owned sprint car, two supermodifieds, and a world superbike champion will attempt to establish half-mile closed course records in the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials” Saturday, March 19, immediately following the Scotts EZ Seed 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.

“The World’s Fastest Half-Mile issued a challenge to the fastest of the fast,” said BMS Executive Vice President and General Manager Jerry Caldwell. “For the first time in years, fans will witness an all-out attack for speed. This challenge ignites new creativity in the racing world to stretch speed boundaries in the most intense, close-quarters setting in motorsports.”

As part of Bristol Motor Speedway’s 50th anniversary celebration, the Speedway extended invitations to several motorsports champions from wide-ranging motorsports disciplines to set class half-mile closed-course records, as well as break the 11-year-old track record.

Former NASCAR Cup driver Brad Noffsinger, Mike Lichty and Bryan Clauson will chase Sammy Swindell’s all-time Bristol track record of 138.442 mph (13.860 seconds), set during qualifying for a World Of Outlaws winged sprint car event at Bristol in June 2000.

Noffsinger and Lichty will be first to try out supermodifieds, the most exotic cars to hit Bristol’s high banks, while Clauson will run one of Tony Stewart’s pavement sprint cars.

Former AMA and World Superbike Champion Scott Russell will attempt to set a half-mile closed-course motorcycle speed record riding a Yamaha superbike. The five-time Daytona 200 winner brings substantial experience on high banked ovals, though never one as tight as Bristol’s half-mile.

Ford Racing enters its supercharged 2011 Mustang GT to Bristol to establish a half-mile closed course record for street legal cars. Ford NASCAR drivers David Ragan and Marcos Ambrose are expected to drive the ultimate “pony car” into the record books. The Mustang’s 5.0 liter engine is topped off by Ford Racing’s twin-screw supercharger and cranks out 624 horsepower. To balance all that power with more driver control, the factory suspension comes equipped with a FR3 handling pack and Ford Racing/Brembo big brake kit.

Competitors will have one hour, from approximately 5 until 6 p.m., to make record runs following the Scotts EZ Seed 300. The “World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials” is a bonus event for the Nationwide Series race ticketholders.

The Speed Trials will begin after the conclusion of the Scotts EZ Seed 300. The driver and car line-ups are subject to change

SPEED will air a 30-minute highlight show from “World’s Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials” on April 2 at 4:30 p.m. ET, following its live broadcast of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.

MSA Set to Battle at Both ARCA Sanctioned Race Tracks in 2011

Todd Ridgeway

MSA Media

February 12, 2011

The 2011 Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) presented by Town Money Saver has one of the most diverse schedules in the eleven year history of the sanctioning body.  Included in this exciting 13 race schedule are the ARCA owned track facilities of Flat Rock (MI) and Toledo (OH) Speedway. It has been 30 years since the supermodifieds last visited the southern Michigan oval and the Toledo event is always a thriller that fans consider a “not to be missed show” every year.

“The one for Toledo speaks for itself,” said Toledo Speedway Manager Scott Schultz.  The Fastest Short Track Show in the World. You have to see it to really understand what it is all about,” stated Schultz.  “If you are a short track racing fan and you know anything about supermodifieds you need to be there for that. We started it quit a few years ago, and it’s just caught on and keeps right on going,” he added.

Schultz continued, “Flat Rock, is a very fast quarter mile. This year will be the first time in 30 years we’ve had supermodifieds at Flat Rock, so, we are using that event as one of our headlining events at Flat Rock for the year.”  “It’s very, very inviting to a race fan to see one of those high powered fast race cars on that little quarter mile track., and you can race two wide at Flat Rock as well.  Hopefully everything will come together and it should be a great year,” finished Schultz.

Both tracks are located within a stone throw of each other and have been under the ARCA management for many years producing some of the best high powered events in the area. The Toledo track itself is a lightning fast 1/2 mile paved, high banked oval with a 1/4 mile oval and figure-8 course inside. Many of the most recognizable names in motorsports history have raced at Toledo Speedway, including Indy 500 winners Al Unser and Gordon Johncock, Daytona 500 winners Bobby Allison, Benny Parsons, 2008 Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman, and two time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip.  Flat Rock Speedway, in suburban Detroit, hosted its first stock car race in 1953 and is among the longest running management/ownership tenures in the country, having been sanctioned by ARCA and promoted by Marcum Promotions every season since 1962.

Schultz added, “The folks at MSA are excellent people, we have no problems what so ever. Most sanctioning groups around the Midwest are pretty darn good to work with. They work hard, they know that they have to put their mind to things, and put their foot down to work with the short tracks.”  ” We are all in this together, we are by no means out of this economic problem, it’s happening all across the country. I am not sure people really know just how tough it is in the Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana area, but, if we all work together we can keep this right on going,” explained Schultz.

The MSA stops will be on Friday night June 17 at Toledo, as Flat Rock will play host on Saturday August 20. The race fans will be on the edge of their seats as they witness the hard core open wheel racers of the MSA group push their fire breathing methanol guzzling big block power chariots to the edge at blistering speeds for 30 laps around the corners at both historic venues. Look for series Champion “Chargin” Charlie Schultz and his well known teammate Tim Ice to battle with the likes of Jon Henes, Trent Stephens, Dave Schullick Jr., and the rest of the top notch shoes that make up the Midwest SuperModified Association presented by Town Money Saver. Mark your calendars for these 2011 must see short track shows. Both tracks are located just off of the I-75 Toledo corridor. MSA 2011 Opener in North Carolina Begins to Takes Shape

Event to Feature Two NASCAR Modified Stars

Todd Ridgeway
MSA Media
January 26, 2011

From the very first announcement that the Midwest Supermodified Association presented by Town Money Saver stars would invade Ace Speedway (NC) on April 15, the racing community, both north and south of the Mason-Dixon line, has been abuzz.  The announcement of the 50 lap extravaganza of speed marks the first time ever appearance at Ace and has been the talk of many conversations throughout the racing community in the off season because this event will mark the first time since 2008 that the supers have been in the Tar Heel state.

Two recent driver announcements have further enhanced the already stellar field of supermodified pilots and shows that the MSA, C&C Promotions, and the management at Ace Speedway are working hard to make this race the talk of the supermodified season.  NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers 2010 Most Popular Driver Teddy Christopher, from Plainville Conn., and 2010 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Champion  Burt Myers,  of  Walnut Grove NC.  have both made clear their intentions to compete at Ace in MSA competition.  Both Christopher and Myers are well known and respected throughout the racing community for their aggressive style of racing with several checkered flags and Championships under their belt. Christopher will be wheeling a brand new car for car owner Clyde Booth. Christopher won an ISMA event last year at Berlin (MI) in the Clyde Booth No. 61 car. Myers will drive the No. 52 car owned by Randy and Rhonda Burch. For Myers it will be a whole new ball game as he has never driven a Supermodified before.

“Well, its called a Supermodified, so it speaks a lot,” said Myers the 2010 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Champion. “I first saw these cars at Concord (NC) a few years back and they where two-and-a-half seconds faster than my Modified. I am pretty sure I am going to enjoy it. The race Promoter Chad Kepley called me and wanted to know if I wanted to drive one. I just said as long as it is a good and safe car, heck yes. I am looking forward to it, the faster the better,” finished the 35 year-old racing veteran Myers.

Myers has captured eight wins on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and is the Tour’s all time pole winner with 23 poles to his name. He was also the youngest ever Bowman Gray Stadium (NC) track Champion in 1999.  In all he has 44 feature Modified wins at Bowman Gray and four track titles. Winning the last two NASCAR Whelen Southern Tour Mod races of 2010 allowed him to capture the series Championship. Burt is also the winner of the 2008 and 2009 North South Shootout Modified races at Concord (NC) Speedway.

Myers has enjoyed success in the past at Ace Speedway. In 2005 he sat on the pole for two NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified races and winning one of those events. Say’s Myers, “Ace is actually about a 4/10 of a mile track. Turns one and two are tight, while three and four are swooping turns. The track is tight for good competition, yet wide enough for good passing,” noted Myers.

“We are really excited about having Burt in the car,” said MSA president and car owner Randy Burch.

“This is going to be a great addition to the MSA for this race. Hopefully it will lead to more for Burt in the future with the Supers. Everyone is excited, hopefully a huge turnout of fans, as I am sure it will be a great race. We at the MSA are looking forward to this event,” finished Burch.

Race promoters Chad and Charles Kepley have been hard at it as well. The father son team that forms C&C Racing Promotions have three key announcements to pass along. For the racers, this will be a televised event as the FOX South Network will be doing the coverage. For the fans it is a can’t loose deal. The Ramada Inn will be offering rooms for up to four people for just $55.00, and the Best Western Hotel will be offering rooms for up too four people for just $69 per night, with a hot breakfast included in that price, both in Burlington NC . Another key deal and a race fans dream come true, for just $30 you can buy a combination ticket for both the Ace Speedway MSA show April 15 and the South Boston (VA) Speedway double header show the next day, April 16, featuring the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and the K&N NASCAR East Pro Series. The Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) opened up their 2011 season with their annual awards banquet of the previous year in Westlake Ohio this past weekend as they also celebrated ten years of wild open wheel racing. Driver “Chargin” Charlie Schultz and the May Motorsports Team where seated at the head table and congratulated by all whom attended on their 2010 Championship. This was the first for Schultz, but the fourth for the May motorsports team. Both Schultz and team owner David May where quick to thank all in attendance for their support, as well as the MSA officials and board. Schultz summed it up best when ending his acceptance speech he thanked his Mother and Father. “With out them I would not be here doing what I love, racing cars,” said Schultz. May went on to thank his many sponsors who included Advanced Auto Parts and Landrum Springs. Both Champions received leather varsity type jackets with their names and Champion of 2010 on them as well as two very tall trophies.

Special Awards Given

As the top 15 in points where honored, so where many special awards presented through out the evening. The Steven Stout  team captured the Team of the Year and Owner of the Year awards.  The Stout cars finished second and third in the points with drivers “Liquid” Lou Cicconi and Trent Stephens. Driver Jon Henes whom captured to very popular wins during the 2010 season was honored with the Most Improved Driver Award as well as the most prestigious of all MSA awards the Ralph Jaycox Achievement Award. In a turn of great sportsmanship Henes accepted his improved driver award but then called young Brandon Fisher to the stage and turned the award over to him, saying he deserved it, he did an outstanding job in 2010. Henes finished fifth in the final points, while Fisher finished in seventh. Third generation driver Zach Gibson was honored as the Rookie of the Year and also received the Hard Luck Driver of the Year award.

The Gibson family was on hand for the presentation of the Terry Gibson Spirit Award named in honor of thier late brother. From L to R is Zach Gibson, Jeff, Gene Lee, Larry.

Long time Supermodified shoe Gene Lee Gibson was honored as the Terry Gibson Spirit Award winner. A very emotional moment for the Gibson family that was in attendance as this award was named after Gene Lee’s Brother who was fatally injured at Toledo speedway in a Supermodified accident just three years ago. Other award winners included Sportsman of the Year Rich Reid tenth in points, MSA Support Award Jack Smith eighth in points, Mechanic of the Year David May, and the Best Appearing Car award went to Randy Burch sixth in points and the Gillingham team. The future also looks bright for the MSA as not only did Henes knock down to checkers in 2010, but veteran racer Tim Ice took home two of his own, including the wild non wing event, on the heels of a fourth in points in a second May Motorsports car. First time checkered flag heat winners where also awarded which included the young guns of Matt Palmer, Brandon Fisher, Zach Gibson, Brian Sobus, and Jimmy Paller. Matt “The Cat” Palmer was also honored with the ninth points finishing position.

2011 Schedule Announced

Many key announcements where made during the evening as a board meeting was conducted earlier in the day at the host hotel conference center. The 2011 schedule was released which includes 13 events for the new up coming season. It all kicks off April 15 at ACE Speedway in Altamahaw, NC, that will be followed throughout the season with five races at Sandusky (OH), two at Lorain (OH), one each at both ARCA tracks of Toledo (OH) and Flat Rock (MI), and one at Oswego (NY). Two new venues come on board which include South Bend Motor Speedway (IN) and Motordrome Speedway (PA), each will hold one event. There could yet be one addition at a later date, but according to MSA adviser Kevin Jaycox this is the first time in MSA history that some tracks wanted dates but the MSA had to turn them down believing a 13 race schedule with one more possible is a pretty good run for 2011.

Burch Retires

Longtime racer, friend to all, and MSA president Randy Burch announced that after 32 years of racing he is calling it quits.  Burch caught everyone by surprise with that announcement. He did state, however, that he may race the Hy Miler Nationals ISMA show at Sandusky in July, but is yet undecided on that idea. Perhaps the biggest news is the addition of a new associate sponsor in Adkins Glass out of Sandusky Ohio and a new title sponsor in Town Money Saver.com. The MSA will now be known as “The Midwest Supermodified Association presented by Town Money Saver.”
