1999
The "Fall Open Nationals" event at M-40 Speedway was an attempt to resurrect the old "Tri-SAC" days of the mid 70's & early 80's and was the brainstorm of Bobby G., the late Dion Parish, Tom Grosse(M-40 owner/promoter), Pat York(Michiana Vintage Racers), and Dan Neilson of RetroRockets.org. It most probably was the last event of its kind, (at least in the mid-west & east coast) with its mix of "uprights" (winged sprint cars), "roadsters" (modern-day offset supermodifieds). small block and big block V8 engines and even a V6 sprinter. While not highly attended by fans,(the weather was cold and rainy), it was a unique blend of cars and racers for a unique, one-off event. The race was won by Jim Shirey of Lorain, OH.

The Sandusky De-Icer in April was always a great way to kick off the season. In times past it was sanctioned by ISMA, CSA or whatever acronym was around at the time. This particular race was unsanctioned if memory serves us correctly.

This race was the one and only event held by Rocky Fisher's Northern SuperModified Association. I helped promote this with him after a meeting at the Ft. Wayne Coliseum indoor USAC midget show in January of that year. Avilla, located in N.E. Indiana, was always one of my favorite tracks to watch the supers race at, but sadly is no longer around.

1988
Salem was always one of my favorite places to shoot. It just seemed easier than Winchester and there never seemed to be as many photogs fighting for spots. There was a lot of light reflected off the track and and guard rail and the corners were more sweeping. Of course standing out in the wide open at the front stretch pit exit didn't hurt either. This open comp show was the second one of the season and came in October. It was really windy this day and was overcast all day long as well. There's a lot of shots of the Gibsons because I had been asked to document this race for them for the purpose of off season sponsor proposals. The spring shows at Winchester were always filled with a great mix of cars and lots of action. This event also featured Ed Adairs AAMS Midgets on the card. I think this roll is from the super heat, the midget feature and the super feature.

To the best of my memory these pictures were taken most likely sometime in 1989. I'm still trying to knock down an exact date, but I believe it was possibly a mid-summer show. Thanks to George Wilkins and Kevin Eckert for help identifying some of the AAMS midget guys!

1987
For several years the Sandusky Cavalcade was sanctioned by ISMA. Always a popular 'post Classic' race, the supermodifieds shared the card with many other divisions. 37 Photos Arguably one of the best International Classic 200's of the 80s, this race was won by "The Snake" Warren Coniam after a torrid battle with Gene Lee Gibson & Bentley Warren for nearly the entire race. Most of the race action was shot using a 70-200 zoom w/ a 2x Multiplier from our seats in the back grandstand. I've also included shots of the Modified 200 as documentation since there were a couple of supermodified racers in that. 76 Photos This is one of the first Nationals I ever shot. This shoot contains two rolls and it's plain to see I wasn't very good with the flash yet. Still there's a pretty cool feel to the photos I think.
