Jeff Abold’s NEMA Midget on Display at A&P Auto Parts in Oswego

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.

NEMA Midgets Return to Oswego Speedway August 25th

OSWEGO, NY (May 15) – For the first time in seven years the Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA) will return to Oswego Speedway on Saturday, August 25.  In an effort to reintroduce Speedway fans to NEMA Midget racing, Jeff Abold’s No. 29 midget racer will be on display at A&P Auto Parts, located at 160 E. Bridge St in Oswego, from Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19.

Abold, 22, has been a prominent runner on the NEMA stage for several seasons.  In 2011, Abold competed in eight NEMA sanctioned wing midget events, finishing in the Top 5 in each.  The second generation driver, from Baldwinsville, even managed a return trip to victory lane on September 10, picking up his third consecutive Boston Louie Memorial main event win at Seekonk Speedway in Massachusetts.

While Abold plans to compete in the first NEMA event at Oswego since International Supermodified Association (ISMA) champion Chris Perley took the win back in 2005, he is focusing his full racing efforts in 2012 on the Novelis Supermodified division at the Speedway.

“Oswego Speedway is our home track, it is right in our back yard, and it is good to be back,” said Abold.  “We’ve kind of been away for a few years, and this is the first time we are going to run weekly here, and I think we are going to enjoy it.”

In 2012, the NEMA Midgets will enter their 60th season of competition and both NEMA and Oswego Speedway are excited for their return to the ‘Steel Palace.’

“Having the NEMA Midgets back at Oswego is big for our Speedway and for northeast open-wheel racing, especially as a warm-up for Budweiser International Classic Weekend,” said Oswego Speedway co-owner, John Torrese.  “If you have never seen the NEMA cars fly around the ‘Steel Palace’, you won’t want to miss it.”

Accompanying the NEMA Midgets on the August 25 racing card will be the series stepping stone NEMA Lites division.  Entering their fifth season, the Lites have proven to be one of the more successful developmental divisions in open-cockpit racing.  Moving into the division in 2012 will be young Avery Stoehr, the son of NEMA Midget veteran Russ Stoehr, an 8-time feature winner at Oswego which adds into his 48 career NEMA Midget victories on tour.

Joining the NEMA Lites as a first time division in Oswego Speedway’s 62 years will be the U.S. Legend Cars.  Established in 1992 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the U.S. Legend Cars were introduced as a low-cost, budget form of racing for the weekly short track racer.  Since their inception the U.S. Legend Car Series has exploded nationwide, becoming a proving ground for up and coming young drivers, as well as a mainstay for the budget weekly racer.

“We’re very excited to have had the opportunity to put this event together for 2012,” said Torrese.  “With our Novelis Supermodified and Pathfinder Bank SBS Series having the week off on August 25 to prepare for Budweiser International Classic Weekend, we still wanted to be sure to take advantage of the beautiful August weather in Oswego and give our loyal race fans a show.  We couldn’t be more pleased to have the folks from NEMA and the U.S. Legend Cars come on board to help make this happen.”

2011 was an exciting campaign for the NEMA Midget Series as Randy Cabral and Bertrand Motorsports came out on top of the 13-race schedule as champions with two feature wins on the season coming at Seekonk and Twin State Speedways.  Cabral will return in ’12 behind the wheel of the Bertrand No. 47, but will have a host of rivals on his heels throughout the season, including at Oswego.

The Stoehr brothers will once again be in action for the coming year with Russ driving the Dumo’s Desire No. 45 and Greg in the Stoehr No. 26b.  Brother Russ is the all-time leader in NEMA Midget wins at Oswego Speedway with eight.  His first came at the ‘Steel Palace’ in 1995, with the latest coming back in 2001.  Greg managed to pick up a NEMA feature win in 2011 at Lee USA Speedway.

Joining the Stoehr’s as potential threats to Cabral’s championship chances are Adam Cantor, Paul Scally, and Mike Horn.

New to the series in 2012 are NEMA Lites graduates Seth Carlson and Jim Santa Maria.  Each will join former Lites graduates, now full size NEMA feature winners, Todd Bertrand and Anthony Nocella.

The next event on Oswego Speedway’s racing schedule is the Mitchell’s Speedway Press Memorial Day Weekend Tripleheader on Saturday, May 26 featuring the Novelis Supermodifieds, Pathfinder Bank SBS Series, and the Race of Champions Modifieds.

Morton’s Winning Streak at 23 and Counting

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.

Canadian Supermodified Racer Hopes to Bring Home Another Winchester Win-As a Car Owner

Holly, MI – May 15, 2012 – Canadian, Gary Morton, was the last man to ever win a Super Modified race at Winchester Speedway. In fact, he won the last two events there. He won the 1989 and 1990 fall events at the speedway. Supers haven’t raced at Winchester Speedway in nearly twenty-two years. So technically, Morton has a winning streak that currently stands at twenty-three years.

Stoufffville, Ontario, Canada's Gary Morton at speed on the frontstretch of Winchester Speedway in 1989.

Morton will be at the track this Sunday for the first time since 1990 when Must See Racing will debut its new Supermodified series. Morton wont be behind the wheel, but he will be supporting the event as a car owner with Brampton, Ontario, Canada’s Dave McKnight behind the wheel of his familiar #70.

Morton recently recalled that chilly early November 1990 Sunday afternoon when Supers last ran Winchester Speedway.” The last time we were there we got booed by the fans,” Morton says. “It wasn’t a pretty day. We tore up a lot of cars and they red flagged it. The fans got impatient. They ran some other stuff so we could get some cars repaired and finish the race. I ended up winning it.” Perhaps Sundays event will go a lot smoother than that long ago 1990 event.

Morton’s vast experience at the legendary Indiana speedway should help his driver out tremendously. The duo will be battling several other teams for a hefty payday. The winners share for Sunday’s event will be one of the biggest paydays of the year for the division. $6,000 will be on the line with another $1000 being paid for fast time thanks to BIOBASED.US as part of their ‘ Winners Circle Bonus ‘ sponsorship.

The event will have several significant headlines. This will be the first time in twenty-two years Supers have raced at Winchester. In addition, the new MSRSMS will be hosting its inaugural event. This will be the first time in the history of the speedway that Supers have raced with wings.

Two-time defending MSRXSS champion Troy DeCaire is also entered. Jarrett Andretti Impressive in Oswego Speedway Test Session

Press Releases from supermodified tracks, teams, sponsors.

Quickly Enters Low 17 sec. Bracket in Strong Racing Supermodified

OSWEGO, NY (May 11) – Oswego Speedway had not seen the likes of an Andretti on its racing surface since 1967, but that all changed on Sunday as Jarett Andretti, 19, took his first laps not only at the Speedway but in a Supermodified. Behind the wheel of the Burke’s Do-It-Best Home Center, Strong Racing No. 99, Andretti quickly became comfortable, easily clocking laps in the mid to low 17 second range.
“I can’t thank Pat and Terry Strong and the whole Strong Team, Burke’s Home Center, and Oswego Speedway enough for this opportunity,” said Andretti. “I’ve driven on tracks that my father has raced on, but never a track that both Mario and Aldo have. It means so much to walk through the same gates they did, and take on this Speedway. Hopefully we will be back to do some racing in the future.”
Projected rain showers moved the announced test from Tuesday, May 8 back to Sunday, May 6; just one day after Oswego Speedway opened its gates for racing. Both Jarett and his father John arrived in Syracuse in time for racing and took in some of the action during the 62nd Annual Opening Night at the ‘Steel Palace’ on Saturday presented by Gater Racing News and The Palladium-Times.
“We spent a lot of time in the pit area talking and meeting with people,” said Jarett. “It was great to see all the different ideas that each of the car builders had, and it really allows for great racing. The racing was awesome, lots of passing.”

Father John, an Indianapolis 500 veteran and winner on NASCAR’s premier Cup circuit, was also impressed.
“This is the first time I’ve actually been here,” said John. “I think I’m more impressed with the race track than anything else. It has so much character. One minute you are going up hill, the next down. One turn is as wide as can be, the next narrow, like turn one at Indy. It is one of those tracks where your line really dictates your lap, so you have to hit your marks. I think Jarett can really learn a lot racing here and in these cars.”
Throughout young Andretti’s nearly two hour test session, he certainly did learn a lot. With the guidance of 2-time Novelis Supermodified feature winner Jerry Curran, Andretti quickly found his line and before long hit a fast lap of 17.4 seconds at an average speed of approximately 129mph.

“I knew a good bit about Supermodifieds and Oswego Speedway coming into this, I did my homework,” Jarett said. “I just told myself that Oswego is a race track and the Supermodified is a racecar. The transition reminded me of going from a Focus Midget to a National Midget. The acceleration is certainly quite different, and it was the same going from the National Midget to the Supermodified with double the horsepower. The first few times hitting the throttle really pushed me back in the seat; it was like riding in a space shuttle. After a while though, you get used to it, you pick the throttle up earlier and smoother and before long it became somewhat routine.”
Sunday’s successful test session at the Speedway has Andretti wanting more.
“I’d love to come back here and actually race at Oswego,” Jarett said. “We would like to run 4,5,8,9 races if we could, at least the Classic, that is at the top of my list. It is just a matter of getting things worked out logistically and seeing where the rest of my racing schedule falls.”

Jarett’s father is also eager to make it back to Oswego, and believes the timing is right to make a bid at Supermodified racing at the ‘Steel Palace’.
“I love that the box these cars work within is big enough that a guy can sleep at night and dream up an idea, then go into the garage and make it happen,” John said. “Everyone welcomed us with open arms, showing us ideas on their cars, which they built themselves. It is really old school, grass roots racing, but at such a high level. Oswego Speedway is riding a wave right now, and we would like to be a part of that wave.”
For more information on Jarett Andretti and his racing career visit his website at www.jarettandretti.com.

News from the Ohio River Valley and the Great Lakes

Dave Shullick, Jr. Makes the Most of Late Race Charge to Take MSA Opener at Sandusky Speedway

By Bob Stascak-Elyria Chronicle-Telegram

Sandusky, OH 05/06/12…..Sandusky Speedway opened the 2012 racing season on Sat. May 5, 2012, the 62nd season of continuous racing action. The evening was sponsored by Reeds Salvage and saw the Town Money Saver Midwest Supermodified Association (MSA) and the new Ohio Late Model Series (OLMS) which is sponsored by Bills Auto open their respective divisons racing season. The MSA would be honoring Viki Rodisel a long time Sandusky Speedway fan and a member of the 4th Turn Crazies. Trent Stephens was the fast qualifier in the MSA with a time of 14.473. Taking the MSA heat race wins were Bobby Dawson and Mike Lichty.

The thirty lap MSA feature saw Jack Smith and Jon Henes lead the fifteen car field to the green flag. Smith took the lead as the caution flag waved on lap two when Bobby Dawson spun off of turn three. On the restart Smith pulled away from the rest of the field as Charlie Schultz took the second spot. Schultz took the lead before the caution waved for Jon Henes who spun in turn four on lap four. The running order was Schultz, Smith, Kyle Edwards, Dave Shullick Jr. and Jeff Banyas. On this restart Edwards dove down low to take second as Shullick moved into third. Smith and Moe Lilje rounded out the top five. Bobby Dawson moved into the top five as he got past Smith just before the caution waved when Lilje made contact with the backstraight wall on lap ten, Lilje was not injured. Schultz had a commanding six car length lead over Shullick Jr., Edwards, Trent Stephens and Dawson. Jim Paller spun in turn four on lap thirteen which would be the last caution in the race. On this restart Schultz again pulled away from Shullick Jr. but Shullick Jr. who was the second fastest MSA qualifier here tonight was gaining ground on the leader. With two laps to go Shullick Jr. shot into the lead and his ACME Racing teammate Trent Stephens took over second. When the checkered flag waved it was Dave Shullick Jr. back behind the wheel for the Steve Stout owned ACME Racing team and once again back in the winners circle. This would be a very special win as the Shullick family was celebrating the birthday of Dave Shullick Sr., the man who won the very first Hy-Miler Supermodified Nationals and is a five time winner of that prestigious event.
