Amtrak Agriculture

bobby-g-cartoon

The things you think about riding along on an Amtrak train. The mind wanders. It’s a little like singing in the shower or those semi-lucid moments at four a.m. when you are wishing you could sleep…kinda like right now as I type this on the gBerry, (ain’t technology great?).

Last year about this time, I was embarking on a roadtrip to North Carolina to ring in the supermodified season at Ace Speedway. It turned out to be the start of a lot of new friendships and the re-birth of old ones that had withered from lack of TLC.

In years past, I would have been In Cali doin the same at the “Lizard Lounge” enjoying the warm sunshine and sweet fragrance of orange blossoms in the Central Valley melding and mingling with the eye burning smell of spent methanol at Madera Speedway.

April showers should be called April flowers in this supermodified fan’s world because it’s always been this time of year that new things start to bloom.

This year, it’s a little different. I’m embarking on a new journey. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a ‘new beginning’, but I do believe it’s a bit like getting out into the spring garden and tilling up some new soil in order to have more room to sow seeds that will bear good fruit from stronger vines.

This whole Must See Racing deal is something that I’ve been hoping to get planted for a while now. Ya know? I’ve not really said a whole lot here about how I really feel. I’ve spoken at length about it on the show, but here, well here is where I let it roll so to speak.

It’s good folks. And not just because I think it’s good for Bob Gangwer, it’s good because the seeds are sown in good soil. The seeds that have been planted are not just going to be thrown into the ground and left to the elements while the gardener walks away without tending them. I see that the gardener is a master at watering, fertilizing, pruning, and nurturing the seedlings to maturity in order to bear good fruit.

So many times, I’ve been caught up in the storm that washed away seeds of truth, plants of transparency, and fruit of progress.

I don’t believe it’s so this time around. No this growing season is going to be one of bounty. This harvest will bring about food for the division I love. Our banquet table will be overflowing with new varieties of delicacies and seated at that table will be guests who are willing to share the feast and linger long enough for the type of positive, insightful, and forward conversation that all good dinner parties should be made of.

So the question remains-are you the type of gardener that waters his seeds and tends his plants to bear good fruit, or are you the type that would rather scatter the seeds to rocky soil without water and then wonder why the plants never grew?

Let me know what kind of garden you think will grow this supermodified season in the comment section below.

12 Super Wishes for Christmas

On the Soapbox graphic small
I don’t generally ‘wish’ for a lot of things.  I am, for the most part, satisfied with all that I have and grateful to simply be able to have good health, a roof over my head, a shirt on my back, and some food in my belly.  However, there are some things within the supermodified division that I am calling 12 Super Wishes for 2012.  From #12 to #1 you’ll find them in bullet points below. Ok, ok, yes I did kind of take the easy way out. Hey, it’s Christmas Eve after all! So read each one carefully, and understand that I have no ill will towards anyone while putting these wishes out there.  I simply love the division and those involved with it, and while we may not always agree on everything, communication is what’s most important, and truly, unselfishly loving the DIVISION as we should each other is what is most important. Making a List and Checking It Twice

On the Soapbox graphic small

Since the next episode of Wailing with Wing Side Up will be our special year end episode, I thought it would be pretty cool to go back through all of the episodes this past year and take a look at the who’s who of supermodified racing that we’ve been able to bring to you LIVE each week.  Ok, that’s total BS. The real fact is that I was going through all of the archived video on Ustream trying to come up with ideas as to what I should do to keep at least 10 people excited about the show as they recover from a massive New Year’s Eve hangover.  As I went through 51 clips totaling over 60 hours of footage, audio, and a whole lot of screw ups, I started to see how really cool it is that we can bring your heroes to you each week as well as help educate those that choose to listen.  So here it is…the definitive list, checked twice, of every person that has appeared on Wailing with Wing Side Up since our first episode of 2011 on January 3rd. I’ve listed the guests as they’ve appeared from episode 105 to 156.  Those with multiple appearances have asterisks for each time they’ve been on the show.  It’s pretty impressive list if I don’t say so myself: [Read more...]

Purple Hats and Helping Friends

On the Soapbox graphic small

Many of you have been following the news about the recent loss of supermodified fan Ray Gregory. In this small corner of the world of auto racing, it seems that nearly everyone had some sort of connection to Ray.  A lot of you played along in his supermodified racing pool and if you didn’t, you had certainly heard of it from various other supermodified websites.

Ray was a big supporter of Wing Side Up and could often be found in The Wailroom on a Monday night chatting away with his fellow supermodified “Fans, Friends, Freaks, and Fanatics.”  I didn’t always see eye to eye with some of his thoughts or the way he chose to convey them, but then I’m sure many of you don’t agree with how I do things either.  The thing is, Ray touched many…maybe even MOST of our lives who hold Oswego Speedway near and dear and he never failed to say hey and stop for a quick chat with just about anyone. Endorsing Candidates

On the Soapbox graphic small

I’ll make this short and sweet.  I’m not the UAW or the NRA, but I feel strongly enough about the upcoming ISMA elections that I am offering my endorsement of following candidates. If you are an ISMA member, I urge you to send in your ballot and encourage you to make an educated vote regardless of whether or not you agree with who I endorse.  Call or email the candidates to find out what they stand for and what they plan to do to lead ISMA for their 3 year term.

Wing Side Up and Bobby G. endorse the following candidates for the International Supermodified Association Board of Directors:

  • Dan Soule
  • Randy Burch
  • Mark Sammut

Wing Side Up and Bobby G. endorse the following candidates for the International Supermodified Association Officers:

  • For Vice President-Richard “Doc” Hathaway
Howie Lane will run unopposed for the office of President.  I turned down the nomination for reasons that I will discuss on a personal level with anyone who asks.
Kathy Harrington will run unopposed for the office of Secretary.
Delores Murphy will run unopposed for the office of Treasurer.
‘Nuff said.

Dinnertime @Vance Toe River Lodge

On the Soapbox graphic small

An absolute gem of a place to stay. On premise wine making and soon to be opened brewery, this quaint out of the ordinary lodge and campground is a model of self sustainable living.

Situated on the side of Elk Mountain in Avery County North Carolina, the main lodge is built in 1919 as the T.B. Vance General Store which supplied the mica miners with nearly all of their needs.

It is now a bed and breakfast, restaurant, and features full hook up RV pads and tent sites as well as zip line canopy tours and world class disc golf course.

I think one of the coolest things about this place is the passionate nature of the staff. Each one understands how lucky they are to be surrounded by the beauty of the place and because of that are very knowledgeable about the area.

We’ll talk more about all of that later but right now-the fresh trout needs to be cooked and the Milk Stout from the Blind Squirrel brewery needs drinking!

Exclusive Wing Side Up Interview with Mike Lichty on World Record Attempt

On the Soapbox graphic small

All day long I paced the floor of the gPad waiting for news about Mike Lichty and Brad Noffsinger’s attempt a World Record at Bristol Motor Speedway.  Nervous.  Not excited.  Nervous.  Finally thanks to Chris and Brent Seelman, the news starting coming in and if you follow Wing Side Up on Twitter or watched the Twitter feed on the front page you were getting the same information I was from the source.  That news helped to comfort me some but it also stirred up a need to crack open a PBR  and sit by the phone like we used to about this time of year waiting for updates from Phoenix and the Copper World.

When it was all said and done Mike and Brad and the rest of the guys crazy enough to try this stunt came out un-scathed and were able to go really, really fast.  Jason Blonde,(a guy we would LOVE to see in a super after having watched his career for many a season when we still lived in IN),  ended up with the all-time record at Bristol, even after banging the wall hard enough to have to get the Port-A-Power out to fix the damage.

While Brad struggled to get comfortable in the Howie Lane 97, even to the point of near calamity after they fixed some fuel feed issues, Mike took right to going fast and it looked as if he had it in the bag, especially considering Blonde’s issues and resulting thrash to get the car ready to even make an official attempt. Chasing Records

On the Soapbox graphic small

I just got off the horn with Mike Lichty. I had to tell him again he was freakin nutz. It was good to hear his voice though, and really I didn’t expect his tone to be anything different than what it was.  This going fast thing just isn’t something he gets too excited about, except for the fact of loving to do it.

As I write this laying on the couch at the gPad half-assed watching some show on Hulu, drunk after a good night of looking at Steve Abt’s supers and staring down the long neck of Green Meanies at the Front Door Tavern, I still think this whole deal at Bristol Motor Speedway is silly shit.  Call me a negative nanny, but I really don’t think that it’s going to do anything in particular for the division other than generating another episode of “shock and awe” and in reality it’s more of a publicity stunt for Bristol Motor Speedway.

Seems weird to hear me say that I am not in favor of a publicity stunt huh?  Look folks get it in your head right now that unless there’s someone down there actively promoting the division and explaining the cars and networking with potential new fans and sponsors, this deal isn’t going to do anything more for the supers than running at Airborne Speedway did.  So often times we talk a lot about how things like this are going to propel the supers to the next level, but we never look at the big picture of how to capitalize, mobilize and monetize the promotion.  And for those of you thinking we are going to race at Bristol-fahgetaboutit.  Brad Lichty already told me “Ain’t gonna happen and if it did the only way it would be done is if were by invitation only.” [Read more...]

The Best Laid Plans

On the Soapbox graphic small

But little Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
Go often askew,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!

Still you are blest, compared with me!
The present only touches you:
But oh! I backward cast my eye,
On prospects dreary!
And forward, though I cannot see,
I guess and fear!

Robert Burns

I think I used that title before.  It’s something I remember my mother saying on occasion and it’s always seemed to ring somewhat true.  Regardless, while trying to catch up the backlog of stories on my Google Reader, I came across an article on IndyCar.com about how Jay Howard was going to “Wear the Pants.”  Now I’m not a big Jay Howard fan but I am a huge fan of the IRL.  So I clicked the link and read more about it.

Howard is trying to win a contest being put on by Dockers called “Wear the Pants.” The premise being that most of us have always wanted to do something other than just work day in and day out at a job that we don’t particularly love. So he entered the contest and his plan is to qualify for the 2011 Indianapolis 500.

My goals aren’t quite as lofty but after seeing the amount of votes he had, I thought that maybe I could get more. You know I love a challenge. I dug deeper and came up with this:

target=”_blank”>Wear the Pants

Cool promo eh? I thought so. Enough in fact to go back to Jay Howard’s entry and take a closer look. “I can do this,” I thought to myself. I clicked on the enter button and filled out the basic info of name, address, email and such, clicked into the box to use up my 400 characters describing my “Plan” and drew a blank. [Read more...]

Dignity, Class, Respect

On the Soapbox graphic small
Note from Bobby G.-I’ll preface this post by saying that I am not suggesting anyone stop going to Oswego Speedway.  Because of my passion for the division and the track, I am simply frustrated, as are many other people about the things that go on there that seem somewhat senseless.  I needed to get this out.  I consulted with a good many friends before writing it and now posting it.  I am hoping that it spurs open and honest conversation that brings forth solutions to some problems.  It’s a long read-get some coffee, feel free to comment when your done.

“Why is it that every time a little momentum starts to build at Oswego Speedway, something jumps up to nip it in the bud?”

I started that blog on the first day of August of this year, then I parked it.  Let it set.  I could tell what direction it was going to go.  Ma always said, “If ya got nothing good to say, then don’t say anything at all.”  Mom’s are pretty damned smart.  Especially mine.

Now, here it is a little after 4:00 am on Monday, August 23.  It’s been raining for pretty much a day and a half, nearly two, and as I sit here at the kitchen table trying not to wake the sleeping beauty in my bed, I find little comfort or peace of mind in that rain, nor the warm tea with milk and honey that I am sipping on as I write this.
