12 Super Wishes for Christmas

I don’t generally ‘wish’ for a lot of things.  I am, for the most part, satisfied with all that I have and grateful to simply be able to have good health, a roof over my head, a shirt on my back, and some food in my belly.  However, there are some things within the supermodified division that I am calling 12 Super Wishes for 2012.  From #12 to #1 you’ll find them in bullet points below. Ok, ok, yes I did kind of take the easy way out. Hey, it’s Christmas Eve after all! So read each one carefully, and understand that I have no ill will towards anyone while putting these wishes out there.  I simply love the division and those involved with it, and while we may not always agree on everything, communication is what’s most important, and truly, unselfishly loving the DIVISION as we should each other is what is most important.
  • I wish the ‘old school’ would respect and embrace the ‘new school and allow positive change without uttering the word ‘cant’ or having their egos bruised. It’s time to take a real honest look at policies and procedures. This is the 21st century. Learn from the past, plan for the future, excel in the present.
  • I wish fans would rely less on gossip, sarcasm, and conjecture and more on facts, truth and positive messages when it comes to commenting about the division. You never know what sponsor or potential new team or promoter is reading what you so eloquently typed as an anonymous name while hiding behind a computer screen.
  • I wish drivers would get in their cars when asked THE FIRST TIME and not hold up the show. I don’t care who you are, or what the circumstances are. You are there to race. Get in, strap in and shut up.
  • I wish for more advertising dollars so that I can keep Wing Side Up afloat. It’s really coming down to the wire as to how much more I can provide for free.
  • I wish I could bring supermodified racing back to the Michiana area on a regular basis-even if it was like the Lee USA Speedway 350 Small Block division. There are literally 20 or more 1/4-1/2 mile paved ovals within 2 hours of Goshen, IN and encompassing an awesome demographic. I say let’s do it!
  • I wish for fields of 20 or more supermodifieds for every super show in the country in 2012. I take that back-I wish for QUALITY shows, with no red flag fuel stops, loads of passing, and wheel to wheel racing.
  • I wish for drivers to remember to thank the fans if they are in a victory lane interview. Remember how Nokie Fornoro did it? They are there for YOU. YOU should be there for THEM!
  • I wish all sanctions would stop wasting time during a race waiting for a car to be pushed back out of the pits. If the track is clean-we go green. No exceptions. EVER! Maybe a pits open-pits closed rule would work. And one other thing-if you stop on the track to bring the yellow out…you just left yourself open to the race director’s subjective interpretation…expect to pay the consequences-good or bad.
  • I wish any supermodified sanction or track, that refuses or fails to understand, embrace and implement social media marketing with experienced paid personnel-the very best of luck….you’re going to need it because it’s not 1982 anymore and simply saying “We are the ‘Ultimate Short Track Race Car’” doesn’t cut it when it comes to promoting your tracks, sponsors, teams and events. The tools are out there. There are people who know how to use them. Get with the 21st century. Sail with the wind, not against it.
  • I wish for Love, Peace, Health and Happiness for ALL of my supermodified racing family.
  • I wish for NO injuries of any kind whatsoever during the 2012 season.
  • I wish for my buddy Jeff Russell to be able to pick up the phone and call me.

So there you have it. Pretty simple really. Now here’s two things I want you to do for me, if you truly believe that the supermodified DIVISION is the best thing in short track racing.

#1-Go to ofracing.com and sign Jeff Russell’s guestbook. Here’s the link-http://ofracing.com/index.php/get-well-jeff

#2. Leave a comment below about YOUR Christmas Wishes. They don’t have to be supermodified orientated. I want to know what you want for Christmas.

I love you all and remember to spend time with those that love you if you can. Be safe and remember the true reason we are celebrating…the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. Spread the love friends…spread the love.

Now for you entertainment enjoyment-

Your comment about thanking the fans ala Nokie Fornoro is right on the money. No fans no racing–get it!
Also, tracks have to run these show promptly and efficiently. Quick yellows hold the crowds interest, no one likes dragged out races.
One more. ISMA has to get better at promoting the series. It’s pathetic when Larry McReynolds doen’t even know what a super is.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a few comments about the column. I’ll refrain from expounding on the ISMA comment other than to say it will take a polar shift in mentality to change the way ISMA promotes itself, it’s sponsors, it’s promoters, and it’s product. Really appreciate your thoughts on this. Come back soon!
