Finding the Sense

Tim Timms It is with the heaviest of hearts that we must pass along the news of the untimely passing of Oswego Speedway competitor and friend Tim Timms.  He will be remembered by all as a friendly, helpful, kind man and staunch supporter of the supermodifieds. His smiling face and jovial demeanor will be greatly missed. The entire staff of Wing Side Up would like to send our heartfelt and sincerest condolences to Tim’s family, friends and crew at this time. God Speed Tim.

I found out last night.  I couldn’t say anything out of respect.  What do you do when you need to talk about it and need to try to make sense of things like this, yet you can’t really say much?

First of all, I pick up the Bible.  I know that God is just and fair and that He will guide me to a passage that He has written.  He did.  Then all I wanted to do was go to the garage.  So I did.  I sat at the front of the race car and just looked.

I sat and wondered what makes men do the things they do.  What drives people like me to want to be close to these daredevils.  I wondered all about the what’s, why’s, when’s, how’s, where’s, and what for’s of this thing we call supermodified racing and tried to see what it all means in the big scheme of things.

Sad? You bet.  Confused?  Somewhat.  Comforted? Completely.  I was at peace.  It’s not for me to determine why things like this happen to friends and people I care about.  It’s enough to know that it’s how He wants it.  I guess as I get older, it’s easier to relinquish the need to control all aspects of life and just let God do his thing.  Being in the garage in front of a supermodified that a one friend owns and another friend races, surely helped to ease my mind.  It’s my element I suppose.

I didn’t know Tim for long, only having really spent time with him starting last year.  But he was someone that I immediately felt a kinship to.  Each time I got to spend time with him, he always had a smile and never disappointed me with a bad story.  He never failed to make me laugh, and like so many of his fellow Canadian’s always seemed to make his points with some self effacing sarcasm while he offered up another beer. It was funny, how he’d always say he would steal my girlfriend and I’d tell him he’d need everybit of that $10g he’d won in the Eagle’s Fan Plan to keep her happy.  That’s not really true of course but it was always a running joke between us.

I really felt like Tim was something that supermodified racing at Oswego needed.  I had said for a while that we were missing out on all the great competitors from north of the border and how much we needed another influx of them.  It seemed to me that Tim was the start of that again.

So this weekend, we’ll all move on to another supermodified show.  We’ll talk about Tim and what a shame it is that he’s gone.  But I hope we all remember that we need to take the time to smile, appreciate what we are given, and be glad that while he was here, Tim made the world a little brighter.
